  1. One aspect is that it is Europe that directly benefits from the oil and gas transit through Georgia and while Russia has intersted in stability and peace along their borders and Europe prefers political stability along their oil supply pipelines there are these conflicts. Of course Russia has a major share in the market for strategical resources like oil and gas on the european continent and the EU countries are trying to bypass them by getting a direct access to non-russian resources in central asia via Georgia.

Georgia is seeking to claim back power in the separating parts of its country. These parts have an ethnical russina majority. Especially South Osetia (60% + of russian population of which 50% hold a russian passport) claimed independance and is seeking closer contact to North Osetia which is an independant country in the Russian Federation. Parts of Georgia runnning away? Maybe Georgia shouldn

  2. AND they are now trying to put a chip in your body to make you into a domesticated sheep...

Nobody would need a chip to turn citizens into domestic sheep. All that is needed is a credit card and a mortgage on their homes + getting them worried about their future, jobs, etc....

Concerning the "Why dont you go to Russia then?" -thing: When the GDR was still there this was a dead-beat argument if somebody claimed that there was something wrong with the society and political situation in Germany. Why don

  3. It doesn't sound cynical. Georgia's NATO aspirations, Saakashvili's antagonism towards Russia, the strategic importance of Georgia as a supply conduit for oil from the Caspian Sea, the large Russian ethnic population in Osettia, ALL these things factor into decisions being made in Moscow.

The main aspect might be that Georgia is the most important independent transit country for oil and gas pipelines from central asia towards Europe. That fact and the outpost position right at the southern border of the Russian Federation is what made them interesting as NATO candidate and this is why Saakashvili might have felt safe to claim back control of South Osetia even with military force. Of course Georgias active support for the U.S. in Iraq helped him feeling safe for this action.

On the other side Russia has a historically grown population majority in South Osetia of about 60% which had been offered russian passports over a long time to support the independent status of South Osetia from Georgia. Since North Osetia belongs to the Russian Federation the purpose of this becomes obvious.

Russia just needed to show that they won

  4. US President George W Bush

"Russia has invaded a sovereign neighbouring state and threatens a democratic government elected by its people. Such an action is unacceptable in the 21st Century. The Russian government must reverse the course it appears to be on and accept this peace agreement as a first step toward solving this conflict"

Sounds strange but familiar, no? XXX has invaded a sovereign state... Such an action is unacceptable in the 21st century...

With Russia there are no speculations about weapons of mass destruction, everybody knows the bear still has his claws and teeth. But so do the U.S.

Anybody wants to invade them? Talking about invading sovereign states for own or any others advantage, probably even without any legitimation Bush is just the right one to be the voice of moral, right?

Of course Russia is acting quite massively, but that is a signal for several nations that are trying to isolate Russia politically, economically and strategically. Russia allready refused to have their natural resources exploited by western international companies. I the given situation Russia just has to tell them: Hey, don

  5. If Georgia is in war against the civil population of sothern Ossetia it would be good if someone would stop them.

However, if Russia gets massively involved one intention behind it might be the message that Georgia is no NATO candidate at all and the NATO should really stay away freom that area. This area is about control of the access to the major shipping ports for oil in this region and some western countries try to cut russia off from that access. Moscow is certainly not keen on any confrontation but they are not afraid to stand up if someone is trying to isolate them.

As cynical as it sounds, this story might be much bigger than Georgia.

  6. One interesting aspect is that some U.S. media complains about anti-american propaganda on european media. Stories like "war on terror" are just not believeable to everybody any longer. Weapons of mass destruction in the Iraq were never found. But it is a known fact that Saddam Hussein was made the little emperor of Iraq by the U.S. and that he later became inconvinient and uncontrollable. Iran-Contra wasn

  7. SLIGHTLY OFF TOPIC...

I was just thinking about it and realized something. There is a retail store here in the States called Harbor Freight Tools. They sell a wide variety of things there, most of which are made in China at less than half price of what you would pay at one of the big name retail stores. The quality of some of their tools is great and the quality of some of their tools is poor. I have found the same to be true in the "Name Brand" retail stores. What really opened my eyes was when I noticed that the same industrial tile saw at "Lowe's Home Improvement" was $400.00 more that the same saw at Harbor Freight. The only, and I do mean only differences were the color of the paint and the name on the sticker affixed to the body of the saw.

Face it guys, everything we purchase in the Western World these days is produced in China or India anyway. Quality has suffered in some cases, and in other cases it has improved. Bottom line, if you can have the same look, feel and function for a lesser price it only makes sense to buy it.

I have owned many reps, and a couple of gens. To be perfectly honest some of my rep collection is of higher quality and feel. By the way, I sold the gens to buy more reps. :p

    I don

  8. This was a reply to this article just a little further down the page, and I think it sums it up nice and tidy;

This article is rather useless as it only repeats old prejudices.

    - Replicas can be quality timepieces, they are availeable with good quality movements.

    - The statement that a replica owners just wants to impress others by wearing an expensive looking watch is not even close to the truth.

    - Calling a rep owner cheap for that reason is pretty arogant.

    - Good quality reps can be had for the costs of a full service of an expensive gen, even with swiss ETA movements.

    - You can easily find a good watchsmith who will service a rep.

    - I won't expect the author of this text to be able to tell the rep even in a side-by-side comparison if it is a quality piece.

Sorry, this article was not worth the time to write it, just old prejudice, but no real info.

PS - No, this was not my response, I wish it was since I do agree with every word.

I confess that I could not resist to write some words, did not use my real name though. But thinking about it once more I have to agree that it is preferable to keep the masses clueless about this niche hobby. The article posted by JBond has some good questions in it, but then comes to the wrong flat conclusions once again.

If you buy the gens for the love to detail and craftsmanship that goes into them that is just a good and justified reason. If you buy the gens because you think that rep owners and rep watches are just cheap no one can help you (and why bother anyway?). Today there are reps that are of really great quality, fine craftsmanship and lots of nice detail work. Of course they are not 100% 1:1 but if we just think of them as fine watches some of them easily beat most gens in their price class. Even if they are not perfect copies of the gen they are fine watches in every way. And with some of the finest reps the gen manufacturers won

  9. 1. A replica watch shows off what you really don't have: Absolutely NOT! That so pathetic...

    2. Almost anyone can tell a replica watch from an authentic one: Shop at RWG...

    3. A replica watch will actually impress no one: Probably true, but that is not why I buy them. I bought because I love them...

    4. A replica watch will never grow up in value: Probably true...

    5. Poor durability: Depends on the factory and dealer

    6. Lack of precision: Depend

    7. Lack of additional functions and complications: You know nothing about replicas...

    8. Lack of innovative features: You know nothing about replicas...

    9. Replica watch buyers involuntarily support illegal activity of fake watch producers: And your Nike my friend??? Please...

    10. Inner feeling of dissatisfaction: Depend of the product.

    Isn

  10. One word. Yikes! Note the serial too, C000/500. So it was produced before the first one even!

Could be a 0-series that they decided not to produce because it looked like a cheap flea-market rep...

Anybody reported this piece of crap yet? :aggressive:

  11. I just read some info about the antikythera device and I must say that story is really amazing. Due to the scales on the dial and the astronomical constellations at that time the production year of the dial was dated to 82 years B.C. and it seems that it was a complex mechanical computer that gave very detailed information about the movements of sun, moon, and the 5 planets known in the ancient world at that time, including dates when the sun was covered by the moon. It was found that the device even calculated the time between sunrise and sundown for every day and it was designed to cover a period of 1400 years. There are ancient texts that support the assumption that the original design for this device dates back to Archimedes of Syrakus who died 212 B.C.

This complex device might have even allowed to calculate tables for celestial navigation?

Considering that this thing was built some 2100 years before our days it makes me wonder what this ancient culture would have achieved if history had allowed.

A basic wristwatch seems to be a primitive toy compared to this thing...

  12. The Antikythera

    First, view http://www.nature.com/nature/videoarchive/antikythera/

...then take a look at Tatjana van Vark's work, http://www.tatjavanvark.nl/antikythera/index.html

And then- but only if you have the time to get utterly lost in the mind of one of the most amazing people on this planet, go to http://www.tatjavanvark.nl/index.html

Mrs. van Vark seems to be quite a physics expert and a briliant instrument maker. Amazing work! And many pieces that should be considered art work, as there is little possibility of practical use in these days.

The mechanical bombing target computer is an incredible machinery and the only reason to rebuild that thing is that it is an amazing masterpiece of engineering.

  13. Hi guys!

I'm looking for a german pen pal!

I learned Deutsch when I was at school, but I've never tried to speak it.

So my german is rusty and slow. I know a few words but....it's difficult to me to speak fluently...

Of course I can speak it a little bit. The usual stuff...

Buying souvenirs, asking for change money, going to the bathroom, ordering food, etc.. :D

I'll tell you a funny episode...

Once a time I asked the woman is the newskiosk: "haben Sie ein Uhrenmagazin?"

But I pronounced "Uhren" like "Huren"... :bangin:

    Her face was

    LOL! :D

By the way I am looking for a pen pal with MSN Messenger, who would like to chat a little bit about watches or off topic :D

In return I could teach some Italian :p

If you are interested in, just shoot me a PM.

    Thanks!

Kann mir gut vorstellen dass der Frau am Kiosk fast das Gebiss rausgefallen ist. Die Gute muss ein herrlich d

  14. Yea the scratch is into the metal and it is shiny.

And the dial is superlumed so I need to be very careful with this as it isn't a standard throw away dial.

    LOL @ssurfer, Thanks anyway.

If it is a sandwich dial (H-series crown = Pre-V or H-series sandwich dial or 000/005, right?) just get yourself another cheap sandwich dial and replace the front plate as the lume is on the back plate of the sandwich.
