  1. Here: AP JP Montoya

    Also,

I'm an idiot for confusing Montoya with Barrichello. But I still think either way this piece will hold its value. Formula 1 to Nascar to making hotdogs in a racing car.

"I am delighted that Juan Pablo Montoya now officially wears an Audemars Piguet watch on his wrist. He is a friend of the brand and we are thrilled to be making it public. Haute Horlogerie and Formula 1 share many fundamental values such as daring and precision."

"Formula 1" is interchangeable with any other name. The AP and Montoya are not.

That might even make it more collectible!!!! 1,000 pieces of any AP=$$$$$$$

No real collector is that stupid to let it go for $20K.

I didn't understand the pricing either. I was thinking suspiciously, but it's the real deal. The discount (esp. w/o reason) doesn't make sense. Offered with b&p though, and welcomed requests for more info.

  2. Before opening a door through the keyholes I peeked,

And that is how I found the door that I seeked.

    Ken

    That's a good one.

I see you are following the manager's advice to think other than the rules.

All I know is that this guy has to make a decision of which door to choose that will lead him to success. How exactly does he know? Especially since "Everything is nothing and nothing is everything." The doors aren't labeled "Success" and "Failure"

But, given what little information (purposely little) that he has. There is a decision to make with the two keys on a ring, and the two doors which could lead to success or failure.

There is actually a process to this.

  3. I also thought I might mention (I'm just as "deaf" or "blind" as anyone else so I'm still talking)

If you own a Rolex, and paid $$$$ for it. Feel good about that.

That is part of what drives the price too. The buyer (but really a profit-focused dealer, which is perfectly normal).

I'd rather have that Barrichello than a Rolex. (Unless it's dripping with diamonds of course. For sale purposes only).

    Regards,

    Coda.

  4. @ Codeammanus-2014 -

    1. Rolex's value is not "overinflated" - no more so than PAMs or AP - Luxury goods are luxury goods- exclusivity trumps other standard macroeconomic factors, else people wouldn't be paying $8K for something that cost $1k to manufacture.

    2. You never know what the market will bring...just because a watch is popular now does not mean it will always be popular...especially if you were borrowing money (Dani wasn't) to make a quick switch... you never know what fate will throw your way and if you're got family stuff going on...you never wanna tempt fate...

That was not an opinion sir. It is a simple economic fact. To illustrate: A Nike shoe only costs about $3-$5 to make. It is sold for upwards of $200.00 on the high end. That, sir, is overinflated.

The MSRP for a Daytona (Using non-precious metals whose price does not fluctuate) is about $9k. Rolex doesn't discount (that's not inflation), yet dealers sell (and Rolex benefits GREATLY from) OVERPRICED sales of Daytonas. $12k to $You name it. Wait lists affect this price, of course, and one could argue that rarity is justifiably reason for higher price (which is why most people don't gripe about dealer's prices). The gold models are outright ridiculous because of the gold, which can easily be pushed on gold prices going up (which is not always the case over the years). ADVERTISING and the Rolex name are the main sources of their inflated price.

Any item can go down in value. (Again, not an opinion, that's common sense). However, this market GLOBAL ECONOMY on the down side...

What effect has this had on AP?

Give me an example of one of their limited editions during THIS bad time, that has dropped in value in the manner that you are speaking. (Let me save you some time...)Also, this was going to be a quick flip right? So you were speaking of a possible catastrophic economic turn other than the one at present (or soon to pass). During this same time something could have happened to Mr. Barrichello, and we all know the effect untimely death has on already rare items. Both scenarios are just as likely to happen. So, sticking within the realms of the present possibilities, chances are he would have made at least $5k profit, if not more. (Probably not $20k profit though).

    But,

I thought he already said his closing remarks. It included the word "finito" and "It's over with"

So, we have both regressed from the conclusion quite a bit.

  5. I did compare. A popular brand may take a dump next week, an unpopular brand may rise from the ashes to take the place of it. They are all watches and open to comparison. Hublot used to be nothing, now they are red hot, but cooling. LVMH bought them out, LVMH also owns Tag Heuer. Rolex used to be thought of as a tool watch, look at them now. IWC started out as an inexpensive brand, not the luxury brand it is today. All are watches, all are open for comparison. I don't hold any brand in high regard just because of the branding of it.

None of those brands has the combination of history, crafstmanship, and innovation that AP does. The "brand" has earned its status. Not even Tag has. They have come up with some new stuff, but when you look at Audemars Piguet it is an entirely different story and not even in the same class as a.....Rolex.

Even Rolex's resale value is inflated value.

    @Dani,

Glad you found what you were looking for in watchlover321's story, and Cornerstone's comments.

    Mission Accomplished? Hope so.

Happy Hunting on your next deal. And I hope the best for mom.

  6. Did anyone consider that the value of this could be in legitimate free fall because J.P. is now in Nascar? Not to be too judgmental, but F1 types are not Nascar fans. And not too many Nascar fans shop at Chanel or Hugo Boss, if you get my drift. Same reason Tag Heuer's Jeff Gordon watches are cheap as dirt on the secondhand market.

Did you just compare a TAG to an AP.

SHAQUILLE O' Neal can fall off in basketball, but that watch will be worth money, even if he's a bum. Why: two words

    AUDMARS PIGUET.

    Did you just compare .....???

  7. Well I understand that sucks....it would certainly have been "Easy Money" but imagine if you'd brought a watch for 20K and then found it out market conditions caused it to only be worth 17K?

Not that watch. Not even in these "soft" economic times. People who can afford it are actually spending more on luxury items. Never mind that P-diddy cut back on his private jet use.

He could have gotten more than $20. At least.

Same reason why you can sell a Daytona for well over $10k.

    STEEL.

  8. He was going to buy it at $20k, sell it at about $40k

Loss of $20k. (He's thinking like a businessman. Those are businessman opportunity tears).

Not a real loss, but a real loss to him. I get 'cha!

What happens when your $20k loss turns into a $30k profit. It's possible. I've heard of stranger things.

START THINKING ABOUT THAT NEXT OPPORTUNITY.

  9. You should be relieved.

A better opportunity might come by, and you'll say "If I had bought the AP....." So, sometimes a missed opportunity is another opportunity.

And you didn't LOSE your dough. Putting $20k in a bag, and then throwing the bag in a fire is losing your dough.

  10. That's an interesting one, thanks, I like it :)

It's starting to sound pretty unanimous

As for the next one... Have you read the Bourne Legacy? ;) Given how they've taken the series away from the novels (as early as Supremacy) Legacy wouldn't even work as a follow on to Ultimatum ;) Strangely, despite being a fan of Lustbader, I didn't think much of Legacy, as it read as if he'd only watched the Bourne Identity without reading any of the novels, as there was no reference or acknowledgement of Bourne's age, which, by that point, was mid fifties, yet he was flinging himself off a moving bike as if he was Matt Damon ;)

Sounds like a plan to me :)

I wasn't, but all suggestions are as welcome as the next :)

Don't let the brainteasers fool ya. I haven't read a novel since "Kiss the Girls" (It grossed me out).

Treadstone Art (Just thought I might say it again).

  11. all that said, i am still tempted to buy it just because its beatifull, it would look great on the desk. i think i am stupid. :D

    Nah,

Just a watch guy. We all come across as "stupid" to some. Have you looked into a person's eyes while you rave about the beauty of a watch, only to hear them say.

"Oh, I thought it was for telling time, man." ;)

  12. um, I am new, whats a DYR form? I even searched for that term but no love.

    Thanks,

The "Dialing Your Rescuer*" form ;) .

You must have filled it out, dluddy came to your assistance. Don't ya just love this place!

*(This form does not exist. Acronym may have been changed since original post.) :p

    Welcome Aboard Pain!

  13. HOUSEKIHIROBA

The accursed book that has waylaid many an intrepid shopper in the Far East. Used as a catalogue virtually universally by rep sellers out there

Many versions (I think up to Vol. #14 now)

They have a site if you want to see pics

    http://www.u-s.jp

Ostensibly Gen sellers....but their books display many reps (?????)

    Well,

If that is true, then THEY SHOULD BE SUED. They also sell many, many, genuine watches (or at least they have them on their website). If they are promoting themselves as a legitimate service / business to the horological community, they are two-faced by putting pictures of replicas in their catalogs.

    Also,

If they are doing that, that means someone in their organization is dealing with them (replicas) to take the photos. Don't tell me they aren't aware of this in some way. That makes it more reprehensible.

RWG is on the up and up then.

They answer the question "What is What's Houseki-Hiroba?"

    By saying:

"We sell luxury timepieces at considerably lower prices than the manufacturers list price. Housekihiroba is not an authorized dealer. Authorized dealers are not permitted to discount. For this reason, we choose not to be authorized dealers for the most of the brands that we sell. These watches are GUARANTEED 100% authentic, have original serial numbers, original certificates."

Please show me the picture of the catalog with Reps in it. (How do you know, by the way) And why do they spell "Housekihiroba" and "Houseki-Hiroba" (Hyphenated, and without hyphen)

    What does it mean?

    CodA

  14. Holy... I'm not reading 47 pages of this to catch up.. :o

the answer was given many times over. There's more than one way to skin a cat, yes?

A priest was pronounced dead. Self inflicted suicide. hung from a ceiling of a vaulted chapel, many feet above the ground. The only evidence was the body, and a water logged carpet.

How did he commit this act?

What was given many times over? This thread has multiple teasers, I just dropped 2. Ken solved one.

    The next one is above.

As to the priest.---A block of ice.

  15. Warm-up. (This isn't exactly what I had in mind, but I want to see if it can fly).

    Keys on a ring

Mr. Jively is interviewing for the job of a lifetime.

As part of a job interview he is given a set of keys with a note attached, and he is seated in front of two office doors. This part of the interview is to test his overall depth of perception, and creative thinking ability. (It's an ad agency, or something like that).

    The instructions read:

"Everything is nothing, and nothing is everything. One of these keys leads to everything, the other nothing. Choose wisely." You can only use one key to open one door, and you must make a decision."

    She added:

"Don't be funny and try to do "NOTHING" to be indecisive is not part of the "Everything is nothing and nothing is everything." Yes, others have tried that nonsense before.

Here is his dilemma (as spoken in his mind). Can you write the last line?

'Everything is nothing and nothing is everything.'

Two keys, one decision, two keys on a ring?

This isn't what I bargained for, forget the whole thing.

Had she not warned me , I would have tried "nothing."

If I pick key A and find executive bliss.

According to this note, my hit is a miss.

If I use key B, and find but a void—

This whole stupid interview has me annoyed!

Mr Jively: "Excuse me, but can I use key A to open door B?"

Manager: "The rules are on the paper Mr. Jively, obey only what you see."

Well, back to these keys, two keys on a ring.....

Mr. Jively got the job!!! What was his decision?

(Preferably in the form of a nice tidy one-liner)

  16. That's a dangerous game though to ignore warning

At some point the professional prognosticators will actually be right again. And when they are, unfortunately, it may be that people are in a habit of dismissing their direction.

That's a bad way to have to use "I told ya so."

If something like Gustav happens again, I can almost be that more people will opt to not move. If they turn out to be wrong, many of them will not have to worry about ever moving again.

And as mentioned, even a CAT1 can be devastating
