  1. I blame on it on the oyster. They just don't seem to have a sense of equilibrium!
  2. Agreed, So was Trulli who was also was on slicks.
  3. I've only ever had one person comment 'Nice Watch'. I was on a flight to Peru for a hiking vacation. Because of the location and the need to be up at the crack of dawn each day I took a Timex, yes a Timex. Hey, it had an alarm, light-up face and told the time; what else do you need in the middle of nowhere. Needless to say I responded; 'Oh, thanks...' Looking around at work (about 300 people) I observed the following: 1) 50% of men don't even wear a watch. 2) With the exception of a handful of others the remainder wear cheap LCD watches. 3) Our CEO (who I've known for over 20 years back when he was a lowly sales rep) has a Tag Heuer Rep. When I spoke with him the other day I saw his eyes pick up on the Rolex GMT11c that I was wearing; he said nothing. Hey, maybe he will read this post! The bottom line is that, at least in my world, very few people seem interested in watches. I'm also a collector of antique clocks and nobody seems interested in them either! In answer to the original post; if someone showed interest I would explain that I am a collector of high quality replicas. I have no reason to lie, deceive or embellish.
  4. I, also, have an AceTimer. It does run quiet (which is often a problem with low cost units) and arrived really well packed. I chose it on the recommendation of other people that had left positive followup feedback after a few months use. I have heard complaints from 7750 owners specifically that their watch's won't wind on a watch winder but I haven't experienced that myself. I appears to be an issue with the angle of the winder. If you look on eBay for AceTimer you may be able to save $10 rather than buying direct from their site. That's what I did. Avoid winders that run continually (the cheap ones); they will fail and may damage your watch in the process. I hope this helps.
  5. jj69, Yes this is the model from Time4Direct. I did a quick review over on RWI which you can look at. Had no issues with them but as I mentioned in the review you only really know how good a dealer is when things go wrong. Since they are new to 'direct end user' sales I suspect they will try real hard initially. Mickey, Yes you are correct the display back is PVD. Basically the bezel, top plate, bottom plate and the 2 plates over the strap are all ceramic. The underside display ring and the inner body are all PVD. This means that the upper [censored] you see protruding on the top side by the crown, and the one 180 deg opposite, are PVD. I would have preferred the ring to be ceramic but I'm OK with the body being PVD since ceramic may be hard but it's also very brittle and those little posts on the flanges are just too close for comfort. I guess I stand corrected; not a full ceramic but mainly ceramic. Incidentally, I work with ceramics quite a lot thru my work and have always liked the translucent appearance of white ceramic. I would be really interested in seeing some close ups of the white version. OldBrit
  6. I just received my full ceramic model today. The pictures below are from the dealers site. I have to say I'm very pleased with it. The ceramic really jumps out at you. I'm told that some models have PVD covers over the strap which is something you might want to look out for. Note that the rotor center doesn't have the serrations that was an easy rep giveaway on earlier models. Also there is a fine adjust on the regulator that had previously been missing. The only discrepancy that irritates me is that they are still using decals on the rotor rather than engraving. I was concerned that this watch may have been to large for my spindly wrists but it seems fine. Enjoy!
  7. Hey Jim, From what I've figured out you do, indeed, need to stay away from most of the websites out there in the public domain. The dealers listed here are constantly being reviewed by the hard core members and so you would be well advised to buy from them. My advise (for whats it worth!) is decide the exact spec of the watch you are interested in and then contact a couple of the dealers; Rudy and Silix seem to have some of the best feedback, however, I'm sure the others are fine. Price can vary dramatically. Some dealers drop ship, which can be a negative. Some dealers can also be slow to reply to your emails. I don't know what the customs situation is in AUS but you need to be assured that they take the responsibility of customs seizure. If you're looking for something special or specific then contact one of the admin or regular contributors and ask them. Providing you don't come over as a bumbling idiot I'm sure they would be more than happy to point you in the right direction; it's a complement to their knowledge and experience. Automatic movements are great if you're turned on by things mechanical but in reality quartz is fine. It's a personal thing in my opinion. How many asian 7750's will still be running strong in 25 yrs time? OldBrit
  8. Back in the early 80's I was waiting for a flight to depart from Heathrow when I looked at my watch; damn it was broken. I picked up a Guy Laroche quartz from the duty free shop and 25 years later I was still wearing it. Last year I went to adjust it for daylight saving time and the crown fell off; I had worn it down to nothing. Maybe time for a new watch I thought. I had a new crown fitted and went in search of a new watch. After checking out the hundreds of regular watches offered by Sears, Kohls etc I realized that I didn't like any of them. That's when I got the rep bug. My little collection now has a mixture of automatic and quartz movements. I wear the auto's for work and the quartz ones at the weekends for golf, cycling, yard work etc. Latest acquisition is a Hublot fully ceramic in black with 7750. I also have a collection of about 25 antique clocks which drives my wife crazy. I do all my own clock repairs but have steered clear of watch repairs primarily because my eyesight is [censored] these days. I did however manufacture a new click for the fugee of a friends pocketwatch; which was no mean feat. OldBrit
