  1. That reply wasn't necessary. 127 posts, member under 3 years. How did we ever survive before you showed up??
  2. I strongly advise against wearing any watch while doing Bed Spring Push-ups. If she times you it could be bad for both of you.
  3. Doc, you beat me to it. I wondered, where would you put the net?
  4. Beautiful! Tough golf course. Where'd your 2nd shot go?
  5. That's the same one as Harbor Freight sells in the U.S., and I have mentioned a few times in other threads. It really does the job for those of us who don't plan on making a living with it. If you go to Harbor Freight make certian to get the online coupon, usually 20% off. That brings the price to around $10usd.
  6. I think it is very individualized. Each member here has their own reasons for getting into reps. Building or modding a rep to be more accurate is getting into advanced hobbying. Building a franken, or a build using all gen parts is going all out. We all have those options, and can do more, or not, at any time we want. I try to use as few gen parts as possible. If I can build a watch that only those here can tell is a rep, then that speaks to my accomplishment.
  7. That argument has been debated about freddy333's Rolex 6542 white dial. The only part not genuine Rolex is the insert, but it is a genuine JoeyB insert.
  8. Accuracy and durability. Most often the rep Rolex crown's coronet is just wrong. The question then becomes 'Who will see it?' The tube is a part that is used often. Setting, winding, etc., puts wear on the part. A quality tube is less likely to strip it's threads than a rep tube. In vintage applications it can be a different issue, that being money. I wanted the 6mm Brevet '+' crown for my 6542 and 6204. $200+ doesn't work for me when the only ones to see it are me and you guys if I take pics. The only one to get close enough to see it is not interested in my watch, she has other things on her mind. So I went with the rep, modified it some, and saved $180. http://www.rwgforum.net/topic/140709-6mm-brevet-crown/?hl=%2B6mm+%2Bbrevet#entry1046879 Like most everything in this hobby it is a very individual choice. What do you like, what do you care about, and what, if anything, doesn't matter much.
  9. I am Cheap, with a capital 'C'. If I were to make a living, as MD2020 does, I'd invest in expensive tools. In the long run it is less expensive. I only work on my own reps, and I can do most everything with cheap tools. But there are ways to get the quality needed without spending big bucks. Screwdrivers in particular need to be precise, hardened properly, and fit the application correctly in order to do the job right, I bought a cheap set of "precision", color coded screwdrivers off of Ebay. They are made in China, but have the set screw replaceable tips as Burgeon does.I then ordered the Burgeon tips and replaced the Chinese tips. They work quite well and are about $90 cheaper.
  10. Yes, you can do it yourself. Just get a lume kit from one of the watch suppliers like Otto Frei or Cousins. Or contact one of our members who does relume jobs. MD2020 does nice work. PM him.
  11. My first was also from Silix, ala freddy, the 'Turn-O-Graph' model for $198. There were some 5 or 6 coin edge models they had, all using the same case/bezel, and engraved in between the lugs '6542' and '1066' . I was told that those were discontinued, the new ones are not the same.
  12. If your retainer is till true, will seat the crystal properly, then check and see if the mounted bezel is touching the case. That's what was stopping my bezel from turning, it was stuck on the top of the case itself. I sanded the bottom of the bezel, a little at a time, and it started to turn. When it would turn freely, not loosely, I stopped. The washer made it lock up, so I just left that off. As mine is now I apply slight downward pressure on the bezel and turn it either way to set.
  13. So far, no joy. I've been trying to find an inexpensive coin edge bezel for a while now. freddy's idea is best so far, buy a rep with the coin edge and modify it. Most of the coin edge subs were a 'long' coin edge, while the 6542 was beveled top and bottom. I used a 'Tiger' case and beveled the bezel on it, but the case would not allow the insert to sit low enough. The bezel might be adapted to another style case. It does mount with the bent wire.
  14. The dies that come with the cheap press work well in a hobby vise. But for under $10, I think it's a great tool for those of us who only use a press occasionally. It presses the sapphire crystals with ease, not much pressure is required to seat the crystal in the gasket, just a level press and the correct size die. The acrylic crystals are a bit tougher to seat, but it just takes more hand pressure. I noticed that this is the type of press Walmart uses in their jewelry department to press casebacks when selling batteries. So it has some durability when used properly.
  15. I have to disagree. Jonathan Quick was rated highest un the NHL and all we heard was how great he was, until the Hawks beat him. Crawford was rated 2nd. Chara beat up Toews all 6 games, but was exposed as being far too slow. The Hawks went right at him, took his elbows and left him in the dust. The majority of Blackhawk goals were scored when Chara was on the ice. I think this series showed that speed beats size. The Hawk's speed was the key to almost every goal, and the speedy Hawk defense stopped the Bruin's forwards. It's a more European style of hockey, rather than the Canadian physical game. While Boston looked as though they outplayed Chicago most of the series, goals scored were by the Hawks.
  16. Yep, it has to be very tough. That was a still unbelievable way to end a game. let alone a Championship series. I do believe the Blackhawks are the better team this year, but I think The Bruins outplayed the Hawks for most of the series. It seemed to me that when Boston was just pushing the Hawks all over, was in the Hawk's zone relentlessly, and the Hawks looked to be beaten, that they went and scored. I think the series will go down as one of the best series in Stanley Cup play. While history will surely dwell on the two goals in 17 seconds to win, I don't think that will be remembered as a Boston Bruin failure or choke. I think the Boston Bruins should be proud of their series. They gave us Blackhawk fans a great run for our money!
  17. I thought the GMT version was already done, and called the '3186'. http://www.ttw888.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_328_329&products_id=5775
  18. Harbor Freight has them. The dies are key, and this has the nylon dies. It works well. I've pressed case-backs and crystals easily. $12.99 and they usually have a 25% off coupon running. http://www.harborfreight.com/watch-case-press-with-nylon-dies-91621.html
  19. Toews hugged Chara. Kaner has changed, he's grown up some. Most here in Chicago were figuring we'd see a game 7. Boston was outplaying the Blackhawks. But with 1:16 to go, 2 goals in 17 seconds. With the tying goal you could see Bruins were just done.
  20. The date wheel on the Asian ETA is the same as the date wheel on the Swiss ETA. If he meant the date wheel overlay, then that's just applying a new overlay to the movement you're using.
  21. That blue/black is just ugly. And the Blue GMT hand is likely more difficult to see while on the wrist than the green one. A 'Pepsi' ceramic insert with the red hand would be an improvement. I think Ubi is right, Rolex went with the bigger watch case to match a perceived style from the competition. It's like forcing the issue, and that rarely works.
  22. Like the 116710 before it, I think Rolex made a mistake by going to the fat lug case. The ceramic insert is a huge improvement over the stamped metal insert on both, and the maxi dial/hands are nice for older eyes and don't take away from the watch. The solid end link/mid link bracelet, already improved over cheap looking stamped steel, benefits from an added Glide-Loc clasp, and the Triploc crown on the 116710, to make the watches the most durable and practical in the line. But the fat lug case negates all that for me. Though I love the 6542, the 16710 'K' series with the Glide-Loc clasp is till tops in my book.
