  1. I will disagree. It's not a theory, but history. Many had had outside help, but most, including us, did not get that outside help until the insurgent showed that they could win. The French were not being magnanimous. They were being opportunistic as were the Russians and Chinese in Vietnam. The Syrians are on their own, so far, and have done quite well starting with small arms. al Qaeda is not an insurgent group. They have no country they are fighting for, no government oppression they oppose. They are religious extremists who attempt to control people, not liberate them. The Taliban is the overthrown government of Afghanistan. The opposite of insurgent. Yes, Iraq was easily defeated by us, as I said before. A uniformed Army taking the field is much preferable to face than an insurgency. Small arms are used for bad and good, and everything in between. The Flag of Mozambique has an AK-47 on it for reason.
  2. My handguns are semi-automatics. Why would the walls or my family be in more jeopardy with a 9mm or .45 Colt than with a revolver?
  3. I disagree, and believe it is the purpose of the 2nd Amendment to this day. If you'd like to see "a bunch of fools with AR-15's" or AK47s fighting against a well trained Army with tanks, big guns, air power and fully automatic light and heavy machine guns, tune in the nightly news. Any battle experienced soldier will tell you he'd rather face a uniformed Army or an insurgency, they'll answer the uniformed Army. Insurgencies have a way of winning. We won our Independence with an insurgency, adding in our Army later. But more recently we have seen Egypt and Libya win, and the Syrian insurgents winning again those weapons. Small arms can capture larger arms, IEDs are very effective. Add to that no nukes would be used, and roughly half the standing Army would be with the insurgents. 'Red Dawn' is Hollywood, but it is no joke. Ask anyone who was a member of the underground in WW2.
  4. The assault weapon in 1775 was the musket with mounted bayonet. Our militia turned and ran from the battlefield when the bayonets were mounted. Different weapon. Same effect. Our militia didn't have muskets or bayonets. When they were deployed with the weaponry they did have, and used to that strength, they were successful.
  5. This thread may help. http://www.rwgforum.net/topic/150660-vintage-dwos/page-2 I did the red/black on the one that was posted. It can be downloaded, sized and printed using your photo program.
  6. The date window on a genuine Rolex dial should line up perfectly with the correct cyclops for that dial. The 6542 should use a 25-115 crystal, but they are long out of production, hard to find, and not cheap when found. So most people, genuine 6542 owners, and the rest of us use the 25-116 which is .5mm longer distance from the center pinion to center date window. The ETA date wheel does not line up to a genuine Rolex dial, so we use a date wheel overlay. For my experience, the dial is the issue. On GMT models using a genuine dial and overlay on an ETA movement, the pinion is too short and needs the longer pinions to mount the 4 hands. The genuine dial is too thick. Using dials made for ETA movements from places like Otto Frei is an option, they line up and are not too thick, but the window is smaller that a gen Rolex, longer distance from pinion to center window, and not beveled. In this configuration you can remove the cyclops from the crystal and replace it in the correct position using a new one from Frei. IMO 'best' would be to make dial blanks from brass thin enough to clear hands in all applications, but with the date window in the gen Rolex position, same size as the gen and beveled, and use an overlay. I've tried to do that but I haven't the talent, ability or knowledge to make a decent beveled rectangle on a brass blank. I've tried jewelers files, to no avail. If anyone knows how to make a beveled rectangle I believe I can do the rest.
  7. This is what BK posted a while ago, and I am in the midst of doing right now: http://www.rwgforum.net/topic/144657-making-a-gen-style-16710-case-out-of-a-16570-case-and-tw-bezel-assembly/#entry1089607 With a bezel assembly from any of the aftermarket, and crystal, you can use the movement that comes with the Explorer, get a nice dial and it should be an easy swap. I am using the bezel assembly from Clark's, with crystal and insert. I intend on simply transplanting my dial and movement from my 'Retro'. The Retro case is not gen style crystal/bezel, and the lug holes are not drilled through all the way. In order to open those lug holes you need to use a split tip drill bit because the outside 1mm hole rarely lines up with the inside half-hole, and the bit 'walks' ruing the case. I ruined two cases before I made it work, and inside the lug looks like garbage. The 16570 case looks good, I am having lug holes drilled from it being blind, and if it survives all that engrave the correct numbers in between the lugs. I hope to have a nice 16710 rep when done. But sometimes I think that 'smart' would be doing what By-Tor did and get a genuine one!

  9. Looks like they missed, again. They use the same case set with all the movements they use, so buying in cheaper to do a build is a nice option. But it looks from the pics on both Joshua and Andrew's sites that the rehaut is engraved and too 'wokky'. I don't think the 16710 came with an engraved rehaut at the end of it's run, but I'm not certain. Both suppliers have the "Rolex Elbem Etched on underside of Crystal at 6.00". http://www.1-pc8838.com/0rlgs00155-16710-bluered-asian-2813-p-13206.html
  10. Or make your own. http://www.rwgforum.net/topic/150660-vintage-dwos/
  11. Fixed. Yep, that's a big fish. If you look close you can see my Son is wearing a Trusty Time noob Submariner. I've had to re-set the hands 3 times for him, they keep getting knocked off.
  12. This is my Son cliff diving in Hawaii: The attack was repelled and the shark bought 3 more inserts. Honest.
  13. No, no, no! That's normal reaction! They not only taste great, but are less filling too! And they will cure arthritis in your wrists better than those copper bracelets, relieve constipation, stop diarrhea, reverse the effects of premature balding, and solve erectile dysfunction (if it lasts more tha 4 hours find 3 more women). Contrary to popular rumor, we still have no proof that it will repel bear attacks. Nanuq, we need a volunteer... Oh, and you can stick them anywhere you like...
  14. All the inserts for the acrylic crystal models are the same inside and outside dimensions. The sapphire crystal has a larger inside diameter, though same outside.
  15. When I first came here it was in search of education and information on the vintage GMT. RolexAddict and I had talked at length and he got me into the vintage GMT when we both were on another site. That was a few years ago and the trouble then was finding a dial that didn't say "Date" after the 'Oyster Perpetual'. When I came here freddy333 was in the final stages of his first 6542. I even bought his first insert for that build from him. The rest, as they say, is history. RA went on to build the 1675, mine is done by his tutelage. The thing I like about my build that no one seemed to notice, and that could be due to my poor picture taking skills, is that the chapter ring dial I made for it is the 'Exclamation point' dial, circa 1960. I figured if I was going to go 'rare' go all the way! Thanks for your kind words, I appreciate it!
  16. That will depend on how much you wish to spend. There are quite a few builds on site now available through the search button. Everything from all genuine to bargain basement. The one from the cartel is not very good even as a base, IMO. We have a good supplier in Rafflestime that has the small arrow hands now and 6mm brevet crown. He has cases that can be used, with some work. But they all will need some work to get it right. Even the high end cases from Vietnam need a little tweaking.
  17. The 6542 and 1675 inserts are the same inside diameter and outside diameter, along with all the acrylic crystal models. The sapphire crystal models have the same outside diameter, but larger inside diameter.
  18. The 1655 cartel comes with a DG2813 movement. I'm not certain, but I think they convert it ti GMT. The DG3804B is designed to be GMT and is a very good movement, IMO. You can get them brand new and clean from most of the known parts suppliers like Otto Frei, Jules Borel, Cousins. etc. for under $25usd. They take the same hands and have the same dial feet location, so it's a direct swap.
  19. I now have several too, and as freddy and Automatico said, they are good movements but do need to be serviced. The parts are readily available, should you need any. Many are shared by the ETA2836-2. I did a full service on one myself, it runs great. And I have two with MD2020 for full servicing as we speak. He's very reasonable, and saves my tired old eyes! He's in the Chicago suburbs. Just PM him.
  20. Mine is the Clark's. It makes a very precise fit on my 1655 case. The end link points on my Jubilee bracelet were a hair too high and stopped the bezel from turning, touching the bezel from underneath. Once I adjusted the end links, it works beautifully. Clark Watch Parts is on Ebay as Nostalgia-2000 I didn't see any listed, so you might need to email him.
  21. Ronin, I sent the '6' to my Son who is in his last year of college. I haven't heard from him since...
  22. If you can set the time properly then the hour and minute hands are not loose.
