  1. I'm with Mr. X as well. I can't for the life of me fathom why the AP ROOs and Hublots have gained such popularity. I see no finesse or style in them at all, just bling, bling, bling all the way (black is, of course, the new bling). I'd like to see an AP non-ROO though - I might actually consider buying one if it's done well.

Grahams? Now they're just plain grotesque.

  2. My latest EMS parcel from China was pretty much as Offshore lists, except that it took 6 days from being scanned out of China to appearing on tracking here, so be aware that they may be scanning parcels out long before they actually ship. Well, either that or China Post has acquired Orville and Wilbur's plane and started using it for deliveries.

  3. Can't see this having much of an impact, if any, right now. Like NORing says it'll require extra resources and customs is pretty well stretched to the limit as it is. The only danger I see is if customs should also be permitted to charge us a fee for the pleasure of having our watches confiscated, just as they already charge us a fee for calculating how much VAT we should pay.

Basically - as long as there's no profit in it for them, nothing's likely to change. If they can make money off us, then it's time to start worrying.

  4. Hugely underwhelmed. The thing is severely underspecified (a maximum of 64GB storage, no USB, no Flash, no widescreen format = wtf?!) and has no unique capabilities which a smart phone and a laptop/net book can't already do much better. Total waste of money in my opinion.

  5. Rather than admiring looks, I fear that's the sort of thing which will attract loud sniggers behind one's back. Unless you're a professional strongman with 9"+ wrists perhaps. Quite frankly it looks silly even on Sly, although like spooky I'd probably choose not to walk up to him, tap him on the shoulder and say so to his face. And I'd snigger only very, very softly.

  6. You can get a correct Aeronavale, although often only the versions with date are seen. However, I'm sure most dealers can get one without date even if they're not pictured on the site. There are no correct Transatlantiques though, or at least not as far as I've ever seen. I doubt this is a very popular model, so sadly there's probably little or no hope of a correct caseback being produced.

  7. If you're using the tapping method, a sapphire will emit a low frequency sound, while tapping a mineral crystal will produce sound of a higher frequency. The reason is quite simply that a sapphire has far greater density than a mineral crystal and hence is less excitable (i.e. it is much harder to induce vibrations in it, which is what produces sound). However, the sound is also dependent on the size and thickness of the crystal, so the difference will be less pronounced if the sapphire crystal is thin while the mineral crystal is thick and vice versa.

  8. I've received 6 watches from Tony, all very fast and with flawless service. His prices are generally $30 below the cartel dealers on most watches and I'm pretty sure he does at least a modicum of QC before shipping. At least all my stuff has been flawless on arrival (as flawless as possible, that is).

One thing to note is that he generally forgets to send a tracking no, but just remind him and you'll get it. If anything goes wrong, he's also very fast when it comes to correcting the error. One of my watches lacked a screw when I got it, but 1 mail and 4 days later it was in my mail box.
