does anyone know a good source for a rep of the James Bond Skyfall (To Ki To) jacket? Don't want to buy gen as ebay is flooded with overpriced reps sold as gens and I'm uncertain about the sizes, too. So a rep that's sold as a rep would be the right thing to buy:-)

Very interesting thread. I don't have the answer to the original question, but still I'd like to offer my perspective from the branding business.

More important than a brand or product, is the question every human is subconsciously asking himself (often without being aware of it). This question is "who am I". Brands and products help people answer that question - to themselves and to others.

I think Panerai's initial (1990's) appeal was that it was simple, bold, manly and had a kind of warrior aura to it. However many brands have exactly these specs. At the core of Panerai's appeal however, was uniqueness (mainly because of the crown guard). Also, the brand was new YET had a solid history. 

In my opinion, people who fought the first Panerai wave were independent people who felt special. People who didn't follow the herd. 

Maybe the core driver of the Panerai brand doesn't exist anymore. Rather, the opposite is the case. If you get a Panerai, you do follow.

So maybe a person asking "who am I" won't look to Panerai for answer his question. 

I'm fully aware that this logic doesn't apply to the majority of the consumers, but changes start somewhere, and I feel that Panerai's lack of ability to answer "who am I" is the tip of the ice berg.

That said, I believe Panerai will thrive for many years. Without the buzz and the energy. It would be - theoretically at least - impossible for any brand in any category to maintain their vitality and comparing to Rolex is impossible because Rolex was built under totally different circumstances.

Hi all,

just got a replacement bezel insert for said watch. It was too big! Afaik the SSD is 1:1 so I guess the Ebay seller's claim that his insert would fit just wasn't true.

Any tips on an Ebay seller that has them would be greatly appreciated.

Neither of those do anything for me, but then being and old codger, I tend to gravitate to more conservative designs.

UBOAT did that some years ago. I kind of like it but on the other hand it's a bit gimmicky and - fashion wise - too late perhaps

Blasting rocks, and Panerai know it,

as his finish been around your yonks, especially (in this context) among antique PAM instruments, is it fair to assert that the reason they don't bead blast watches (but rather achieve dull looks with Tantalium or Titanium) is that they are thinking like a fashion brand rather than a tool brand?

My thinking as a fan is -  Pam should have offered blasted pieces..lemme think...around 2005 !?

As a designer, I am fascinated and awestruck by the fact that Panerai issues so many "same but different" products at such scale, with such great share of voice and success. It surely is unique and amazing if you think about it. Indeed, the CEO said "it's easy" in an interview a couple of years back; subtle changes within a matrix. No dissin' here folks - I really am amazed. A date window on a model that didn't have one, an embossed maiale logo, something new on the CB - - 

a supreme and very contemporary brand exercise that isn't cannibalizing or deflating the brand - well done! 

Naw, needs the sport hands. Either the classic Mercedes or the 5514 arrows or the fat tudor arrow hands. The DJ stick hands just don't quite make it. I like the idea of an explorer-esq dial. But then that is my favorite Rolex dial overall.

That is a tank, for sure. Kinda like the Tudor Ranger on steroids! In terms of the band, it's a fantasy watch so there is no such thing as the "correct" bracelet. The one that is on it looks fine. A black bezel would be cool too. Is there an insert in that or is the bezel one piece? Looks like one piece.

AFAIK it's one piece. I guess the whole piece could be blackened provided sufficient grail-motivation was present :-)

Whether or not to be true to the original design of a fantasy watch is an interesting dilemma in which a large array of considerations and motivations come into play...

My first plan is to sing my own tune by deciding a US Marine Rolex turned into a Rolex Commando.

Then, having collected the right parts, probably go "gen Tudor fantasy"

But you know what they say about ugly ducklings. Some become swans, other just remain ugly. With watches, IMHO this translates to the feeling you get when you put it on or take it off, whether it "connects".

So if after that it still gets no wrist time, it will be traded off and loved by an RWG or HF fellow enthusiast :-)

Hi all,

here are some US Marine (off the bay) iphone shots and first impressions.

First of all, the bezel is non-click and I mean really non-click, as if it's broken. I am able to lift it 1-2 mililimeters with my fingernails (it is held down by the (in lack of a proper term) weird lug thingies.

Apart from that, it seems pretty good. 

The caseback used to have Tudor 7200 engraved. Also, a watchsmith has written GE04/07 and perhaps14217XXX next to it (by hand, over 7200), and 10/06 under 7200. Somehow, the caseback seems very substantial.

Bracelet - I don't know. Definitely incorrect for this watch, but uncertain wether or not its gen, probably not (?)

Very nice. No, actually that does not describe this watch sufficiently. Spectacular is the proper descriptor & there is no such thing as a gentleman's Rolex being too small.

I agree. Prolly get a gen actually, in order to respect it proper.
