I'll take your advice then, clean it and skip the oiling part.... is it ok to use acetone for cleaning? I can use other type of solvents, such as Isopropyl alcohol, MEK, white spirit etc.

My reasoning was that the watch was dead - my choices were limited, either leave it dead and look at it as a nice bracelet , or send it for a service at a cost of over 200€ + parts, or somehow try to get it running myself! Btw I think you mis-quoted me, I said +/- 5 minutes per day not seconds! I'm not expecting to get anywhere near that accuracy But you're right re cleaning and oiling - that was in my plans, I had already stared cleaning the parts in acetone, ultrasonic cleaner I dont have, but seen some cheap ones on ebay - will consider getting one. Regarding oils I tried to match the viscosities of oils I have access to, but if no oil is better than the wrong type of oil I'll skip the oiling part. I got one type of oil my father uses for his grandfather clock its "Koch Uhrenol Sorte 1" but I don't know anything about it... When I come to regulating we'll see...the search function will come useful I guess. Thanks for all the help and advice - now I just need the parts to get on with it!

Well Rolexman, just about a couple of weeks ago I didn't have the slightest idea of what goes on in a mechanical watch, but after doing a fair amount research I managed to take the movement apart in the correct order and hopefully I'll be able to put it all together in the correct order! I'm by no means an expert, but if i manage to get the watch ticking again and keeping a "correct time", that will be an achievement for me...I'm not a watchmaker or repairer so I'm not going to give the movement a "by the book service" . I'll be happy if it will keep the time within -/+ 5min a day as this is not my everyday watch, but I will do my best to learn and get to know how to regulate the movement. Tools and oils are not worth buying at this stage - it's not worth the cost, I'll still be able to complete the job tho, I just want my watch to start ticking again!! Having said that any help and advice on how best to assemble and regulate the movement would be most welcome! Andy I sent you a pm re the 7750 for parts. Thanks for your help.

Actually the balance wheel is ok, its the escape wheel and oscillating pinion which are broken. The pinion I found it like that, but the escape wheel I broke it myself while screwing the mainspring bridge plate - the wheel shaft was not positioned correctly in the jewel and snapped, I actually heard it ! I need to be more careful next time!

My recently bought Grand Carrera 36RS had stopped working after a couple of months - so after asking around for anyone close to my location, being able to repair it I decided that for the costs involved in shipping and repair I might as well get a new one or have a go and try to repair it myself So that's what I did - following as much as possible to an online manual for the 7750, and using basic tools I managed to get it all apart! So far the only broken things I found are the oscillating pinion, which had the lower pin missing, and the escape wheel ( I broke its top pin while assembling it after cleaning ) I don't really know the real cause of it stopping working so maybe someone can shed some light on this. What I've noticed during disassembly is as follows: Before I removed anything, the balance wheel was not moving. When took off the auto bridge I found the oscillating pinion.60s. damaged. Continued the disassembly with no problems till I got to the balance bridge, it was still stationary - took that off as well Then it was the pallet bridge turn - as soon as I took it off the mainspring unwound with all the gearing spinning like a turbine! Removed all the remaining stuff with out any problems - I noticed a good amount of oil on the main plate - maybe it was too much oil? I re-assembled the mainspring, its related gears, the escape wheel, pallet fork and bridge and the balance bridge assy, nudged the balance wheel and it started ticking again - wound the mainspring a couple of clicks and it kept on ticking away. At this point I think that what ever problem there was. it is now gone...or at least that's what I want to believe! Now I only have to wait for the parts I ordered off ebay to continue. Hope that gen parts fit on the asian 7750! As for oiling the mechanism I'll have to do without the proper oils - they're too expensive at about 30Euros for each type, and there are about 5 types of oils and greases! So I checked their viscosities and matched the closest oils I could source myself - that will have to do. I would only be too happy if in the end I'd manage to get it working again but I have my doubts!

Yeah I had hoped it would keep on ticking for at least a couple of years but its clear I had hoped for too much! I'm not complaining about anything as I was aware that at some point I would have to get it serviced - the thing is where? I don't know of any local watch repairer who services these watches, I'll ask the lad I usually take my watches to if he can take a look at it, maybe he had serviced ETA 7750 before, no harm in asking as otherwise I dont know what I can do other than use it as "a very expensive wristband shaped like a watch." like Jkay said!

Time has come for the first service I guess...came a bit sooner than I had hoped for tho It has suddenly stopped working while wearing it - for me it looks fine, I mean all hands move freely, rotor turns etc, but it wont move... Any ideas what I can do to get it going again, I can post some photos of the movement if that could help with identifying the problem......or else can someone direct me to where I can get it serviced - ideally somwhere in the EU as I'm from Malta

Hi, I had bought a rep Tag heuer Calibre 36 from one of our trusted dealers last March and it's been working fine until today... when I put it on this morn it was working ok but this afternoon I noticed it stopped. Tried winding it as I thought it ran out of steam but nothing, pulled out the crown, all hands move smoothly in all positions no hard points, the rotor at the back turns freely as well. I just dont know what happened Any advice on what can be done? I think it will need a checkup at the watchsmith...

Thanks slask, will keep this in mind when I come to servicing it...but I think I'll let it run for a couple of years before I give it a service - as long as its runs without any issues. Just a curiosity, is it normal that you can hear the rotor spinning on an automatic watch? I've noticed this sound while moving my hand and its quite "noticeable". That's in my shortlist , but cant make up my mind! Looking for a square-ish watch with a leather strap now The ones I'm looking at are these: Zenith Grande Port-Royal Open Tag Heuer Monaco 24 Panerai 1950 Flyback Chrono PAM212

Hmm... and I'd take it that if one can work on an ETA 7750, one can also work on an asian 7750 as they are similar no? I'll ask around specifically for ETA 7750 service, someone who knows what he's doing then... hope I find someone on the island, else I'll have to start studying the movement and become the specialist!

Thanks for the advice Jkay - I won't be worrying about that then, I was just a bit curious you know. I've never owned a mechanical watch so I'm a stranger to how these things move, even though a read a lot (thanks to this forum), when you have the real thing before your eyes and see it working, you don't know what's functioning normal and what's not! I don't think I'll service it yet, but I'll check if there's anyone which services/repairs these watches locally.

Photos as promised, still working fine One thing I've noticed...the large chrono second hand kind of judders, not a smooth sweeping movement, I don't mean the movement's normal beat of 8 bps, its like as if sometimes it skips a couple of beats... not that its bothering me - but just curious if anyone has a similar movement with this same issue. I've timed it with a quartz watch to see if they keep up the same time, after one day they still match up to the second - maybe its not the best way to check this out - but for me its sufficient!

Update: I'm the proud owner of a Grand Carrera Calibre 36 RS ! This afternoon received the package, and considering I placed the order on the 22nd March and order dispatched on the 6th April, it only took 6 days for delivery from China to Malta. That's pretty quick for EMS!! Anyway, I'm really happy with the detail and quality of the watch - and as Jkay said, I think this really is an addictive hobby - I'm looking for my next timepiece Will post some pics soon...

This used to be my favourite ride...when I was younger It is sadly off the road now - garaged- waiting for a rebuild which will probably never come Could be a nice project for my future kids when they grow older tho - but probably they'll think I've lost it! they'd want a new car not a tank! I started collecting wines for these last five years - mostly local premium wines - I'm curious to see what's in your wine cellar...especially local wines! I am by no means a wine expert, just like to hide away a couple of good bottles to enjoy at a later stage. Just hope that by the time I open them up they'll be better than they are now! Wine pricing is also an issue - our local Maltese wines are not too expensive I believe, an average price would be around 20Euro for a good bottle, with prices going up to 500Euro for vintage premium ones. Here is my favourite - I started collecting it just because I liked the label! it also tastes as good as it looks and besides that only about 6000 bottles a year are produced so I'd say it worth collecting This is the Grand Maitre 2009, its a blend of cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc from a local wine maker.

QC image for watch on timegrapher received... Now have to do a forum search for timegrapher results interpretation I had seen a thread somewhere regarding this... Puretime also confirmed that the rotor is marked with the correct markings...ie calibre 36 Have to say that until now communication and service is quite good with puretime, now time will tell if my first rep will end up on a good note!

QC photos uploaded, please give your comments. I think it looks ok from the photos, I asked for an other shot of the back case showing the markings on the rotor. I also asked for a timegrapher pic, just to confirm its working as I dont know what to make of the values!

Ok so I've got an update : On Friday they told me that my watch was not available and that they do not know when the new stock will arrive...so they offered me to choose another model from their range. I replied that I'd rather wait until new stock is available and asked for a refund. I also told them that I'm a member of RWG - and was aware of their problems with the authorities at the moment due to the crackdown of the rep factories. Then yesterday they replied that they had ordered my watch form the factory, and that by that same day or today (Sunday) I 'll have my watch sourced and QC images sent - if not they will refund me! Wow I said! Lets see - so I replied ok I'll wait, a couple of days or weeks don't matter that much to me! So this morning I got this mail from puretime and guess what? QC pics in the post - watch is ready for my approval! Will post the images soon and please tell me what you think....

Bumped into the first obstacle puretime just informed me that my Grand carrera is out of stock, and they don't know when it will be back in stock either - so they suggest I choose another watch. Problem is I want THAT watch and cant think of something else! Bad start for my first rep acquisition

So yesterday I've placed my order for my first rep...from Angus...but today after reading some reviews about him I sort of wish I had not! Lets hope he's not as described on the reviews and that my watch arrives without any trouble.

I'll have to wait for my Zenith then....maybe one day I might get a gen one as a present, who knows! The VCs are real nice watches but not much to my liking - but you're right Gran, the emblem fits well for my nationality. Off to get my first one then...time to take the decision! Will post some pics as soon as I get it...if all goes well...
