  1. This isn't watch related, but I think someone here might be able to help. I am working in a business project and need to get a significant number of parts put through a PVD process. I found a few companies in China offering PVD services, but having emailed 5 I have not had a single response. I've emailed suppliers in Europe too, no replies. Is this typical of how these companies operate? Can anyone recommend a company I can work with who will at least do me the courtesy of responding?
  2. I could pick up a fossil watch for under 50 dollars. This watch will have undergone good QC and be free from defects. Out of that 50 dollars fossil have to... manufacture the watch spend money promoting the brand give retailers their margin provide a long term warranty pay taxes on their profits In reps costing 6 times this price i think we should expect defect free watches. What's the point in the makers of reps working to improve the accuracy of their products, when on most reps the surest giveaway is the fact that something on the dial is crooked, or their is a hair nder the crystal..etc.
  3. Who sells the best nautilus? Opinions?
  4. subdials, and how they are different in the rep.
  5. Having ready a review of a preproduction piece it does not look good. air bubbles under the magnifying crystals crooked dial work really cheap rubber strap movement issues. $400 for something that will only probably be fit for the bin upon receipt.
  6. I want one, but the coating is a concern. Does anyone know of it is hard coating, or just some cheap immitation?
  7. The PVD version will probably be painted or some other cheapo substitute, probably best to avoid it. I'd be surprised if the coating lasted more than a few days without showing wear in places.
  8. well the auction says automatic, the seller looks to do a lot of trade in watches so I assume he knows what he is doing.
  9. To me AR only makes sense on the interior side of the crystal. Why put an easily scratch coating on a sapphire crystal which is used for its high hardness? If you hve double AR you might as well have a mineral glass crystal.
  10. Just looking at the Porsche design flat 6 chrono. available as a rep for around the $350USD mark. Here is the genuine article... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...rksid=p3907.m29 ...available for $1365 The genuine uses a swiss movement that has undergone chronometer certification and has been finished to a high standard. The replica uses a replica 7750 movement that really requires servicing before use to ensure there are no issue with the assembly (post to and from The Zigmeister + fee for service and you are looking at about $100). So now the replica actually cost more like $450. The value proposition presented by replicas of sub $2k watches is pretty poor when you think about it.
  11. If it's engraved then i will pick one up. Did not want one if it had a crappy sticker on. This is the rep I am talking about btw.
  12. is it engraved or a sticker? I've read conflicting reports on this.
  13. Are there any auto detailing products that will impart scratch resistance on the 316L steel most of our watches are made of?
  14. http://www.timezone.com/library/news/news631757485905156250 Whatever happened to the technology?
  15. Just goes to show the markups the cartel dealers have been making. Those guys must be millionaires by now with all the gouging that has been going on the last year or so.
  16. It won't be long before some reps cost more than a slightly used gen.
  17. Not so long ago $200 got you an rep with a genuine ETA movement. Now you can pay $250+ and get a rep with a copy movement that cannot readily be repaired and that are of poor quality. Given the way the pricing curve is heading it is likely that we'll see prices jump into the $300+ zone for basic reps (asian movement/sapphire crystal/some AR if appropriate)
  18. The issue with DLC is going to be cost. I can see people going for this if it can be brought in at the $200-250 range, beyond that I think interest will be pretty scant.
  19. I know someone is looking to offer a DLC service, so I thought I would clarify something. True DLC is pure sp3 bonded carbon atoms and has a hardness in excess of diamond 10,000vickers+. Such a coating is used on the rado v10k scratchproof watch. There are various other DLC formulations that contain additives like nitrogen and metallic elements and sp2 bonded carbon. These are produced to make application more straightforward, reduce costs, or alter colour, but at the expense of hardness. The impure forms of DLC top out at about 4000-5000vickers. There are plenty of companies out there offering pure sp3 DLC coatings, and maybe an approach could be made to one of these.
  20. Do you have a rough idea of the cost to do a watch case using the PACVD method?
  21. Any news on this? have a few pieces i'm looking to coat
  22. This isn't strictly a watch related query, but I know several people here offer various types of hard coating services. Does anyone do DLC coatings, preferably the tetrahedral form?
  23. No, but as i understand it he's a bit uncle [censored] anyway.
  24. I know of TTK, but I believe he ships from Asia. I have problems with customs all the time so prefer to deal with people who ship from UK
  25. Does anyone know of any UK dealers offering the noobmariner? Also I believe there is a 28800bph version, is this correct?
