  1. I got one too and replied, however my invective was somewhat wasted as it read "[censored] off spammer and peddle your [censored] somewhere else. You will now be reported to admin"
  2. Thanks all, that's what I needed to know. I know I can use a 3135 DW as an overlay on the 2824-2 with Stilty's movement ring and I found a gen one that was silver so I wondered.........
  3. I'm building a Franken DJ, SS with Silver dial/white gold markers. Does the gen have a white or a silver date ring (both with black numbers) or can it be either?
  4. It's not strange at all, and as someone suggested above, related to dominance not strictly sexuality. We breed dogs and can get 'chains' of three or four females humping each other or one of the poor downtrodden males. Not that different to humans really
  5. Sacrilege!! Lenon with a Vox WahWah pedal And the Vox Wah didn't come out till 67/68 if I recall correctly. Pity George is playing the Strat, that was later than the period they're depicting, the Gretch would have looked better. Great photos, full of atmosphere, and I bet it was worth hearing!
  6. Cousins do some, don't know if they'd be big enough though - http://www.cousinsuk.com/catalog/4/2/1901.aspx Alternatively buy a dishwasher
  7. One of the issues is whether the Noob is actually interested in watches or just looking for a one off to impress his friends and doesn't want to be ripped off. The first will stay, the second usually won't. Speaking personally, when I was a Noob I found this place a little daunting. RG was much friendlier and Noob tolerant. However I hung in as the depth of knowledge here was impressive, and I have come to appreciate this more and more as I have grown in knowledge and capability. I am currently building a franken DJ, something I could not have even conceived without help from members here and knowledge available throughout the forum. I might add that I have found real kindness here, people who are willing to assist without looking for payback. I think this is a great place! Can a forum be all things to all men? I'm not so sure. I also don't think it is the forum's role to provide everything on a plate for the Noob. Surely some effort is required on the Noob's part, particularly as watches are such personal things and no two people have identical tastes or pockets.
  8. Assuming money no object, a large crown vintage sub. If economy was the keyword, a nice used vintage TT Datejust with fluted 18K bezel and jubilee strap.
  9. Who has the best Sub? (you were saying? ) but I'm not a Noob...........
  10. I don't think the gen manufacturers are following the experiences of manufacturers in other fields. For years in the guitar business, first Japan, then Korea, were thorns in the side of Fender and Gibson, etc, so both gave in and created a cheaper brand manufactured in Japan and Korea, but with official sanction so the perceived value was greater. It also provided an upgrade path from a Far East model to a 'proper' US made model, gave them product separation, no longer Fender and fake or copy Fender, and no doubt gave them some clout with local government. Most other big guitar manufacturers have followed suit. This allowed them to maintain both a reasonable market share and the prestige of their high end models, even if this is simply perceived and not actual and has been pretty successful. The cheaper brands are well thought of and, more importantly, seen as an upgrade from reps now manufactured in China. The next logical move will be Fender/Gibson/etc manufacturing in China. Maybe Rolex should be considering a Replex with clever marketing to make it something special for the less well off.
  11. I'm neutral. Both in reputation and using the tool. Though I would rather have someone say "I don't agree with you" and present their argument than anonymously click a button, and it is not a tool I'd use for that very reason.
  12. Bit cowardly to anonymously try to blacken someone else's reputation.
  13. Sorry should have said in case it wasn't clear, this was a PM

  15. I think what is forgotten on the moral front, is that buying reps, and in fact any Chinese made goods, is providing people with income and their families with food. Their income may be pitiful in Western terms but compared with local rates, I should imagine it is reasonable or they wouldn't do it. If their rates were increased, the goods would become more expensive, and people would not buy them. So which is better? It is all very well getting on high horses but beware the higher, the easier to fall off. Many years ago I lived in Africa and employed a Cook/House servant. People in the UK could not understand this, first the work was demeaning (why?) and the salary was pitiful. However, in local terms the salary was good, comparable with a clerk, shop worker, etc, the perks were more than good, housing, electricity, water, food, etc, and the hours were more than reasonable and the work not hard. It provided employment, he paid his taxes (well I did!) and money was put into the local economy. Most importantly, he enjoyed his job and I consider I was a good employer. If his salary had been say double what we paid, he would have priced himself out of a job, and my wife and I would have handled his tasks ourselves. Was I exploiting him? I hardly think so. As to wearing a rep in public, why not? I have never been called out, rather the opposite in fact, when a gen collector admired my Pam 113 knowing what Panerai was (though of course he had no idea of the finer points). If someone other than a friend is rude enough to ask if the watch is real, I usually ask them to look at the sweep of the second hand and draw their own conclusions. Friends I tell, and like the poster above said they are blown away by the quality.
  16. I won't bore you with the full story if you didn't read the original thread, but Offshore helped me greatly with parts (complete watches in fact) for my old Seiko which was a wedding present many years ago and therefore important to me. He would not take any payment for this, even the postage. I have therefore made a donation to the forum in appreciation of a great guy and a great forum!!
  17. Thanks that's useful, I have access to all that including an ultrasonic cleaner. I will get it off in the end!
  18. I know their DG4813 (8413 or something) does not have the high wheels, I haven't tried their DG2813 but I bolted an NN2813 straight into a Noob Sub rep without any drama so I'm guessing that along with the Rolex datewheel, this may have the higher wheels.
  19. Thanks again Freddy, the razor blade solution worked perfectly. Ran round with a single blade, then two stacked, then it more or less lifted off. And once off the crystal was easy to reset, simply twisted round the small fraction required. Secondary questions.................... The case turns out to be a '78 according to the serial and is in good condition. The rubber flat gasket on the back has been on too long and has deteriorated and left remnants of rubber on the case and the back. Is there an easy way to clean these off? I tried naptha, my favourite standby, but no luck. As it's a sealing surface I don't want to scrape. Also should the bezel have a rubber gasket? The case is not fitted with one, but checking on Cousins site for the case back gasket it is listed as 'Generic Bezel/Back flat gasket (29.287.105)so it made me wonder.
  20. Bob, you'd probably get a 21J from Ajoe and there are plenty of tutorials about on swapping out movements, again Ajoe has a good one. It's a simple enough job apart from changing over the datewheel overlay. However you can also get an NN2813 movement which has more or less the correct datewheel so no insert change! Cousins UK have them pretty cheaply - China NN2813 Movement NN2813M
  21. Yes I'm afraid you've sheared the pin, the second hand has a hole for the pin to fit in. What movement does it have? [edit] Should have said, the pin is on the end of the gear and to replace it you have to remove one or more of the bridges from he rear of the movement after removing the auto wind. If it is cheap 21J, just replace the movement, if an ETA, the parts are available. I'm not certain about the interchangeability of asian and swiss ETA's parts but I would guess most are interchangeable. Oh, and you can pull out the remainder of the pin from the second hand and use that again!
  22. Thanks Freddy, I have some of those single sided razor blades handy, I guess they would do the job from what you describe? I think a cheap crystal press may be a good investment.............(the thought of introducing my precious DJ case to my greasy mechanic's vice is more than I can take!)
  23. I've tried searching on this, but the search doesn't seem to work as I'm getting every post with Datejust or Bezel or Remove! I have just received a gen case for a Franken DJ I am building and I want to remove the SS engine turned bezel and replace it with the fluted white gold one. Also the cyclops is not lined up so I will have to pop and replace the crystal. Is this a job I should be considering doing and are there any tips/tricks? Or should I be taking this somewhere they have a bezel remover?
  24. OS has been marvellous, his assistance has been above and beyond incredible and he has fixed me up and refuses to take payment. Needless to say a donation will be made to the forum in due course!
  25. Is that Rickenbacker a UK issue 340? It's a beauty.
