changing o-rings on a vintage diver

The market is so nice right now for vintage divers, I find it is all I can pick up right not. First thing I do when I get something from the 70s is take off the back and replace the o-ring. It seems that these are always flat or square (not the overall shape, which is the same shape as the round case, I mean the shape of the material itself, not tube-like but more like a brick). Does being pressed in the case for 20 years make the rubber flatten out or are there special shapes of o-rings? I only ask because I always replace these with tube like o-rings which might be correct or not depending...

Chris,

Seal rings are available as both O rings, and flat rings.

You will see a distinct square corner on flat rings.

There are a huge range of flat rings available, but with a set of calipers, you should be able to work out from the area where they sit, and from the profile of the ring being replaced, exactly the dimensions of the flat ring required. Then look at a few of the various suppliers like Borel and Cousins, and see if they have the size you need available.

If all this fails, give me a PM with dimensions, as I have a large range of both flat and O rings.
