Shutter speed is how long the sensor (or film) is exposed to actually record the image you see through the viewfinder. With a DSLR you can set it to Bulb (named because old cable releases used a bulb that was squeezed to release expose the film) and lock the exposure for as long as the battery will last. Your camera has a longest exposure time (minimum shutter speed of 16 seconds.

Indeed, all the beauty shots took a while to do because I do everything by hand no plugins allowed (about 45 minutes per image).
