Gen Topic - Use an AD for service or independent service place?

My gen Sea Dweller is 5 years old...gains about 4-5 min a month and was a daily wearer for about 4 years (until I just got back into the rep world).

I've been told to ONLY have Rolex service the watch as it might cost more but "will have Rolex parts and look like new". Both of those things to me are important as it is my only gen.

My local independent (non AD) says he will only use Rolex parts and claims he does this all the time. He is $250 for a week and Rolex starts at $550 for 6-8 weeks of saying good bye to your watch.

My wife is not happy at me for even thinking of having Rolex service the watch for $550...I understand but I can afford to pay the $550 and think it's safer....

What would you guys do? :wounded1:

Just to interject .. as we are talking about a Gen here, you wouldn't worry about Customs, loss or anything you worry about with shipping reps Internationally. Since it's a Gen, you can claim it for what it is on all the paperwork, insure it for full value .. tracking .. the whole nine yards.

no shady paperwork, and insured for full value is completely different than shipping a rep across borders.

Rolex Authorized service only! Yes you will pay more, but here is the thing, if you go the cheaper route with your independent guy, and there is some thing he can not fix or screws up and it needs to go to Rolex, they will hammer you on price. My watchmaker who has been teaching me, is a Authorized Rolex service tech and sees it all the time. Unfortunately for him, he has to bare the bad news to the owners that the cheap alternative that serviced their piece last, did more harm then good. Instead of a $550 they spend much much more, plus what they paid the cheaper service guy.

There are plenty of qualified people out there like Z that are more then capable of doing the work however, there are even more that are not capable. For a piece of mind and potentially more money in your pocket, get it into the right hands.

Talk to your local or out of state AD's, some have in-house Rolex Trained Service techs that can do the work their in the store in a week and will not have to send it to Rolex.

Like above, I only send my Gen
