JosePR Posted September 27, 2006 Report Share Posted September 27, 2006 I have been browsing other sites just for curiosity, and i have seen some talk about the same steel as genuine, wich is the 904L or something similar. Then i ask you guys, any big differences on the types of steel, specially between the 316L wich is the most popular around our dealers and the 904 that other say is the original. Guest TTK Posted September 27, 2006 Report Share Posted September 27, 2006 316L Stainless steel is the most commonly used steel combo by most manfr's......Rolex use 904L.....which has a higher nickel content.....giving greater corrosion resistance......a side benefit of 904L is that it looks more 'shiny'....or has a higher sheen....than 316L. Very, very few companies can get their hands on 904L (the primaries being Rolex & NASA), much less have the machinery & foundries to support it's manufacture and manipulation (not to mention it's expense). http://www.azom.com/details.asp?ArticleID=470 http://www.machinist-materials.com/stainless_table.htm Generally speaking, most of our reps are in the 316 or 316L range of stainless steels--a very good broad range steel to be in for its scratch-resistance & anti-corrosive properties. There's not enough cost-effective or practical reason to jump from 316 to 440 or even 904 for a watch. Rolex uses it primarily as a marketing ploy.
