Kerbus Posted March 23, 2006 Report Share Posted March 23, 2006 I just got a new DD and when it opened it, the crown was torqued so tight it was literally impossible to budge. After carefully sitting down I was able to loosen it to get moving with a delicate pair of pliers and a piece of ribbon wedged between so as to not mar the crown. That worked, the crown moved but when I went to adjust the time it popped off along with the spring underneath. mad.gif sad.gif The thing is brand new, not even out of the plastic. I'm presently feeling disheartened. I really hope someone can help me out. I have a fairly decent collection of small handtools. I believe I'm going to have to open the back, maybe remove the mvt , in effort to reatach the sping and then the crown. I immediately alerted the dealer, hopefully everything will turn out OK on either end. Below is a photo of the watch in it's present state. I hope you can make out both the crown and spring. I'm good at battery changes and informal dismantles so if anyone can guide me through a possible repair, I would really appreciate it. Thanks guys! You'll probably need to open the movement to get rid of any piece of stem still inside, and then you'll need a replacement crown with stem. Once I got the crown loose, it wouldn't turn anything in the watch before it fell off. I wonder if the whole thing got jolted. As we speak, the watch is running. Hope this all gets resolved. If I understand the composition of the stem-crown make up, there's the stem, the winding crown mechanism that attaches to the stem, and then the crown itself that attaches to that winder. I believe the crown winder mechanism the crown was attached to is torqued so tight into the crown tube that I wound up unscrewing the crown itself while the rest of the mechanism is frozen in the tube. A spring that was underneath the crown popped out when the crown came off. I doubt trying to put it all back on will help because I would still be stuck with frozen crown mechanism. Kerbus Posted March 27, 2006 Author Report Share Posted March 27, 2006 This was the most bizarre tube I've ever seen. It looks to be a clear factory defect. Also, apparently just the round, gold winder of the crown with a spring underneath was forced onto it. When I originally got it loose it just popped off because they are both mis manufactured parts. I'm waiting on the dealer to send some replacement parts and then it's off to Joe. If the winding mechanism itself is stopped ( watch was winding/keeping time fine though), he'll confirm that as well.
