how long does western union take to go from the US to china

Its the first time I've had to use western union due to changes to paypal.

I did it years ago with hont - doesnt take long a day or two

It should be instant ; like 10 minutes

Problem is someone has to go pickup the money which with the time difference could mean same day, next day

Either way very quickly

Instant. They receive the money here, the other branch should be able to release the finds instantaneously.
