When I loosen the screw crown on my PO if I try to turn the crown clockwise to wind I get a lot of resistance so I'm afraid to turn it....Is this normal? I can turn it anticlockwise no problem and it is nice and free and "clicks" after every turn.

Thanks

Turning anti-clockwise doesnt' do anything but ratchet the sliding pinion against the winding one...there is no real reason to turn the crown this way as it only wears out the ratchet teeth...

There should be some resistance in the forward direction, as your not only winding the mainspring, your also turning a bunch of gears in the autowinder...and two of these - the click wheels - are very prone to damage from too fast or too much handwinding...

If you have a lot of resistance while winding slowly, wind the watch with the dial up, and see if you can feel any movement inside the watch...if you can feel something moving (the rotor will be spinning) then the click wheel(s) are either damaged or in need of cleaning.

See my signature for more info, basics 101 and 102 has more info...

For what it's worth... I never, ever hand wind my ETA non-chronograph watches. I don't see any reason for that. They'll start ticking again as soon as you put them on and shake gently. :)

i dont think you wana go counter clockwise might hurt the movement ..

Hi

Ok took off the case back and had a quick look. When the dial is facing up and i wind in the clockwise direction there is a small bit of movement from the rotor, it kind of sways very slightly from side to side. it is most pronounced on the first turn. Not much movement like just a small kind of jitter...

Thanks for the input really appreciate it.
