I've subsequently got it back from him and it's not left my wrist since! Can't believe I ever gave it away! It has however opened a huge can of worms....the sort of can that now finds me searching this excellent forum for all sorts of vintage builds and modding advice! I have a horrid feeling this is going to become a very time consuming hobby!! Oh....and I hope you guys are ready for an endless stream of newbie questions!
