How on earth did my friend manage to scratch saphire? -pics-

Some time ago I sold my precious 312L to a dear friend of mine. Today he calls me and tells me he has a rather large scratch on the crystal.... I was like: 'R U sure?'.... 'It's saphire'! Then he sends me some pics.

How on earth did he manage this?

Bet you anything it's mineral glass. That's a nasty scratch for sapphire.

Thanks for the input. I would say the same if I did not bought this watch myself. Maybe there is a quality difference between sapphires?
