Cartier Santos gen movement (Franken Project)

Recommended Posts

Hello Fellow Members,

I have purchased a genuine Cartier caliber 049 (ETA 2892) for a Franken project.

The case I currently have is the ultimate with an ETA 2824-2 movement.

Does anyone know if I can fit the 2892 into the case without any mods to the case?

Very much appreciated.

Stem heights are different between the 2824 and 2892..

Case won't need modification, but you're going to have to come up with a custom spacer to make sure everything lines up. You will also probably have to do something with the hands as well.

You'd be better off getting one of the 'ultimate' versions that had the A2892 in it and use that as your base.

The other thing to be careful about would be the crown tube. Assuming that's a gen crown in your picture, you may need a gen tube.

tomhorn, I knew that the stem heights were different but still wasn't sure 100% sure in regards to fit. In relation to hands I read that it should fit but again not 100% sure.

I didn't think the watch in the puretime link is an ultimate edition because of the crown and the other dealers do not have that version advertised as an ultimate. Anyhow it would be fine for me as I would swap everything from my ultimate onto that one. I was already considering one but I would probably save a few quid if I managed to fit the gen movement in existing case. I was also considering purchasing one from Andrew or Josh as they are around $30 cheaper.

Another issue with that watch in the link is that it states it is 41.5mm and the one I have is advertised as 38mm. I think I have read somewhere on one of the forums that they are the same size but I would have to contact the dealer just to confirm this.

The diameter of the two movements is the same, but the thickness and stem heights are not. The hands will 'fit' the movement without issue, but still may not work for your version of the Santos given the size differences between the two movements.Therein lies your problem.

Nearly everyone who buys a Santos gets the Ultimate XL version, which is what I linked to. There are standard sized versions of the "ultimate" that used a 2892 as well. I have no connection to PT, I just happened to know his URL off the top of my head. You may be able to find the same watch elsewhere, this was just an example.

You might try one of the TDs to see if they can get you the movement spacer from that version, which would (in theory) take care of your alignment issues. Not sure how easy it would be to get a part like that, but worth a shot.

Otherwise, you likely aren't going to save any money trying to make it work yourself. If it requires a custom movement ring and new versions of the hands to make the height work, you'll spend more than selling your current watch and buying a better foundation to build from.

I agree with most of the points you  made above but I still don't accept the link you sent me is an ultimate version. It's definitely not an ultimate in the pics. I think pure-time is the only dealer that has that model listed as an ultimate. I attached a few pics below to compare.

Unfortunately I cannot sell the watch as I sold the bezel and some parts of the clasp to help out a good friend.

Ultimate version:

My post of links wasn't meant to be a debate on whether or not you think they were for an "ultimate" Santos. As I said earlier I just posted a link from the only site whose URL I happened to know off the top of my head. Buy from whomever you like, but there is an "ultimate" version that came with a 2892 is all I am saying.

Using it as a base is your easiest conversion.
