I just bought an hr tudor big crown and hope I can get it to look like this and still be water resistant. I wanted a phong but not quite ready to take the plunge just yet, a bit more tinkering on budget builds for a bit of practice first

Nope, not negative relief gilt...
It's in the same "level" . I've checked several dials with 20x microscope . 
 


I could be wrong, but I think it's because of the clearcoat that goes ontop of the dial. I've seen some gen gilt dials where there is more depth but also some with less or almost no depth.

You might be right!

 

However the "hole" in the dial in the right angle doesn't happen with these..

 

But we sure are nitpicky.. :) Aren't we?
