Camcorders

Hello all.

We've talked digital cameras before....but this is a new twist. My digital Canon died WAY before it's time.... so I'm in a spot.

Holiday coming up and no camera to catch the antics of another family get-together complete with my crazy nephews and the spectacle of the annual fried turkey :tu:

With all the options out there....and the different media they record to....does anyone have opinions or suggestions as to what has worked for them and why?

Your input is greatly appreciated.

You might not be in the mood for another Canon, but I got a new camera a few months ago and went for a Canon HV20. It's high definition, and records onto regular MiniDV tapes. Great picture quality (the reviews are very good for this), build quality is more 'plasticky' than the likes of Sony or JVC, but then it has a good price point. Cheap batteries too.

I didn't go for a hard disk camcorder for a couple of reasons. (1) Where to store all the data? I'd need a new hard drive every few months - tapes are possibly easier to store than a pile of external hard drives. (2) Data rates - hard drives can't move the data fast enough in high definition. Now all HDV cameras compress the data like jpgs do with photos, but the hard drive HD camcorders have to compress it more = they don't have the same picture quality.

Anyway - I was very happy with it for the price I got it for.
