I was at the flea market today and I found some really cool timepieces...

A guy was selling helicopter parts... (yep, we make those kind of stuff here in France), and I found four chronometers dating from the sixties (mechanical, of course).

Sounds familiar ? Have a look...

Two of them are 30 minutes chronos, the two others are 5 minutes chrono (if anybody know the use of a five minute chrono, please tell me).

For now, the five minute chrono is perfect to boil eggs

Similarity with the B&R instrument is... well... let me just say that it's exactly the same stuff... same rought feeling, except those comes from a helicopter, with is pretty cool...

No AR, as you can see :D but a very similar case, a rotating bezel, slighly heavier (I guess something like 200gr), and half an inch thick...

Cheers

Countdown timers (under 5 mins) are used by aircraft to fly approaches on instruments. If you look at this approach chart, on the bottom right hand corner you will see times posted with speeds. These are for the pilot to navigate from the final approach fix to the missed approach point which is 3.8 nautical miles.

30 euros, yep I've got a 5mn chrono... in my kitchen, to be used to boil eggs... military retirement, I guess :)

Amazing use for it. I approve.

It's great that the old clock can be put back into active service, even if it is civilian. :D
