Power Reserve Question

Hey everyone,

I had an unpleasant experience with my first rep (second hand was loose and bracelet pin was sheared) but I bought it from a reputable dealer and the replacement is on its way. Waiting patiently.

I just had a quick question as I don't know much about movements and the inner workings of watches. The watch I am waiting on is a Panerai Power Reserve and I was wondering, is it possible to "overwind" the power reserve function. With my little knowledge of movements, my understanding is that the power reserve function is, essentially, a spring that winds up as the watch is rotated. What stops the spring from breaking and the power reserve dial to no longer function. Any insight?

no you can't overwind them. if it is automatic, there is a mechanism that stops you from overwinding and if it is manual it won't allow you to wind further once it is fully wound.

as far as the power reserve complication, it is more of a display of how much power is left, similar to the indicator in your car that tells you how much gas you have left.

as an aside, if it is automatic, then you don't need to wind it very much at all. once you get it going, you can slap it on your wrist and the natural movements that you make will get it wound.
