newsnut
I love watches both Gen and Rep. I started 'collecting' pocket watches 25 years ago and stopped after collecting 35 watches. They range from fusee museum pieces to solid silver key winds and include solid gold 100 year old gems. I wore them with 3 piece suits in the 70's and 80's. When pocket watches went out of style I started collecting wrist watches and that phase ended with a 1/4 repeater beauty. However my taste in watches exceeded my pocket book and in 2000 I went to Beijing and started buying Reps. WOW I bought 30+ on 10 trips to Beijing in 2000 and 2001. Everything from Breitling Navitimers to Audemar Royal Oak, Cartier Santos, IWC..I was a happy camper. I paid $12 - 25 for them and most were chronographs. I wear these watches to work and play. On the quartz models I change batteries every 2 years when they stop working. The automatics work great. Failure rate has been VERY low. Two of the 30+ died. Three suffered untimely deaths when they were submerged by my kids (adults). One has a damaged crystal due to being whacked against a rock. I continue to find good Reps and recently purchased a Breguet and a Patek. Beautiful watches that have major similarities to Gen. They are $100 - 140 watches. In summary I find that the ones I bought 8 years ago for next to nothing in China (I'm a good negotiator) have been quite reliable unless subjected to unnatural conditions. But then I did major damage to a Gen Breitling that I wore while swimming. Most people don't know a good watch from a timex so I've never been 'called out' for wearing a Rep. However when I rub elbows with the Jet set (kidding) or go to important functions, I fall back on my collection of Gen's. I guess, at heart, I'm a coward but I love my Replicas.
