Immensely cool (gen) Vostok Maxim Gorky coming soon

Probably should've asked this before purchasing (damn impulse buys), but does anyone know if this comes with a sapphire crystal? Can't find that kind of info anywhere...

Not sure, but since it doesn't specify on the website, I'd guess mineral. Ztech, can you email your seller to confirm? And bTrizzy, I wouldn't be upset about this purchase. Everything I've read about this watch leads me to believe it's going to be awesome -- check out that International Watch article that was previously linked, and then tell me it's not a cool watch.

Where I come from, wearing a Russian watch like a Vostok was a indicator of lower-middle class social status. Today this view has carried over to the point where wearing one is a pretty big fashion faux-pas, because it reminds of days of socialism and financial despair.

I think we can safely assume you don't come from the States.

It is clear that for some time in Russia anybody who has some money wants imported goods. Spending is, well, conspicuous. The purpose is to demonstrate one's financial status. I think Russians themselves have a worse opinion of their own products than outsiders do. But in watch collecting circles (gen) Russian watches have been gaining popularity for quite some time and it has a lot to do with the exceptional value and quality offered by these watches.

In the West there are no such bad memories associated with these products.

Ditto on JohnG's post. That being said, while there isn't a social stigma attached to wearing Russian watches in the States, they haven't been that popular here because (a) up until recently, they weren't easy to get a hold off; (B) the quality of most Russian watches was very, very poor (and made our reps look like gen Patek Phillipes by comparison); and © they were impossible to fix, as the parts weren't available. From what I've read, all three of these things have begun to change in the last few years, particularly with respect to (B).

Doh, this watch won't last very long in my collection then unless it's a real stunner.

I'm a bit dissapointed that they don't use a saphire x-tal, but not all that much. I would have preferred a saphire, but my experience with my other mineral x-tal watches tell me that I have nothing to worry about. The price I paid for it makes me feel better about it. Also, if you really can't stand the the mineral you could send it out for a custom saphire to be fitted. All in all, not a big concern.

Ok, I just got the watch and my initial impression is good. The watch has a very interesting dial and you can see the rotor wind underneath the dial, which is pretty cool. I'll try to take a few pics of her when I get a chance. Most likely over the weekend.

I've just received three watches today and I'm going to offer all of them up for sale. Yep, it's one of those in and out deals. The Vostok just isn't chunky and hefty enough for my personl tastes. I'll include the free dressy auto Vostok watch I got with the Maxim Gorky.

PM me if you're interested. I'll discount the two watches from what I paid for it. Oh, it hasn't even been worn more than 2 minutes.

Sorry to hear you didn't like it, Ztech. You may have just set a new record for in-and-out. Any pics?

I'll try to do a mini review with pics over the weekend. I'm slammed at work till then.

It's a good watch. It's definitely unique. I think it's got to do with the impluse buy and that I got a few other watches in at the same time with the bill. :(

I was hoping for it to be more chunky and hefty though. It's not light, but not exactly what I look for in a watch. So out she'll go. Hey this is the life of a WIS right? ;p

Guys, check out the "other watch" area. I put up a mini review with lots of pics of the Maxim Gorky (MG). Hopefully I did a half decent job with my first review. Oh, and the watch is already gone. Sorry guys. Really, it's a decent watch. I'm just a bit weird like that. I know whether it's for me or not from the first second I hold the watch. This one wasn't one of them, but that doesn't mean it isn't a good watch. It just didn't do it for me, but you guys all know what that's like.
