turboGUATE
I definetly love PAMs, specially vintage. But I can't seem to understand how can a pre-v 203A could cost as much as

Watchmeister
And remember that the bigger they are, they harder they fall. Or the higher they start the further they can fall. Prices have already started coming down on many more expensive watches and Panerai is no exception. Fiddy's no longer clear the market in the $20's. We are now talking teens. On the extreme vintage end prices have also come down substantially. THe last 3646 that came up for auction with a range of $70,00 - $100,000 did not sell. Double Red Rolexes appear to have come down 20-30% (based on nothing other than my eyeballing results so take it for what it is worth). The ask on the 203A was as high as $140,000. But even Risti can run out of money. If I were a betting man it will go under $50k.

I think that one thing is appreciation for what is meant or represents (from a watch collector point of view) and a completely different thing is the speculation and just the madness of having disposable income just to use on what ever is a trend or because someone said is cool, so I do it. hambone
I just ordered DSN's 203a, which seems like a bargain indeed. What did the gen 203a cost when it first came out? $1500.? The price increases of Panerai watches are astounding.
pizzanooo
One of the second hand dealers who posts on risti offered up yesterday a 202a for... $99,000.
Watchmeister
And on the one hand, it only takes one. On the other hand you will never know what it actually trades for. The rarer and more expensive the watch the less efficient the market. But yes, they certainly have appreciated dramatically irrespective of any price declines. pizzanooo
Your right Kruz, the actual buying price is cloudy if done. Even in these times the market for a rare watch as this can be inflated to those who feel it warrants the price. Who knows, 10 years from now it will seem a bargain... Watchmeister
Gen 203 says "I have money". Beautiful vintage Angelus says "I have taste".
PAMman
For me it is similar with watches and cars. I can appreciate vintage cars and watches for what they are, but it is the modern classics that I would want to own. Vintage Panerai hold no special attraction for me but the modern classic models (preV, preA and A series) are the most desirable in my view. I understand the relative values and would certainly prefer any preV to a vintage Panerai.

There's a saying in spanish that says: "En gustos se rompen generos". Which could translate: "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". Cheers!
