Is it OK to check for references in this forum?

If I was interested in buying a rep from a private seller or a dealer is it acceptable to ask for references here? As I'm a nooby I have no idea as to the reputation of any seller.

Two things you can do 1) check the sellers feedback rating and 2) read the members trade reviews section.
