  4. I had an older Wenger 'Swiss Military' watch apart a while back with: 'swiss made' on the box 'swiss made' on the manual 'swiss made' stamped on the outside of the caseback 'swiss' at the bottom front of the dial 'china dial' stamped on the back of the dial 'china' stamped inside the caseback 'china' engraved on the bracelet clasp cbp eta quartz movement stamped 'swiss parts, hong kong assembly' So...the eta 805.114 that retails for $7.95US must account for 51% of the value. Probably go for $3 each by the thousand. It also had a supposedly 'swiss made' renata battery...add another 30 cents. I seriously doubt this watch has ever seen switzerland...maybe they have a picture of the alps hanging in the HK factory to qualify it as 'swiss made'.

  6. For the most part, I subscribe to all of the same ideas already mentioned here, as shallow as they are I'm just another man with complexes, vices and vanity. There's just one thing to add on my end - I don't like the finality that comes with purchasing a complete genuine piece. I think that for me the big allure is the journey; the fact that try as you might, you're always on a trajectory to your goal but rarely arrive at the destination. The destination would probably be an all period-correct, matching genuine parts build, which is ultimately stasis and the end of a project. The watches we put together are flawed, we have little to no disposable parts to replace the worn or broken ones and we spend time improving, improvising, hunting for information or parts, buying tools and learning new techniques. We connect with tons of cool people in the process and this why many of us are here and this is why this is awesome.

  8. The most recent offerings of the Mark XVI and Mark XVII are very good. Puretimes site, puretime.co, is unfortunately down since Chinese New year, but I believe the cartel-dealers also have these. (F. ex. Trustytime at http://www.ttw168.com). Trusty also has a Mark XV-rep. These can be had with Asian 2892, which is a Chineese version of the same movement as the originals. They can also be had with 2824/2836 movements which are cheaper and in my experience more reliable. However, these are thicker movements, so it adds to the height. I have just bought the new XVII, and might be interested in selling my old, serviced XVI. It is reviewed in this review. send me a PM if it is of interest. Or, if you like the style and would prefer a good quality gen, you can search for an used Eddie Platt Speedbird. They are excellent value.

  14. I'm about to order a watch that has an Asia Valjoux 7750 movement. I've never had one of these and I know nothing about them so I'm hoping I can get some advice. Is it generally the case that the chronometer works with these? Push one button to start/stop and the other to reset? I've heard they need servicing to keep them healthy. How important is this and how often should it be done? If you don't wear it for a while will it start going again if you give it a few shakes then wear it? Are they a reasonably reliable and accurate movement? Anything I should know before I buy? Any comments welcome.
