  1. Do you know what, you're probably right. As it happens I've always found Frankens quite hard to sell. I was offering this at my cost price of the parts and I got some good deals, but alas everyone wants a free dinner these days!

In actual fact this is growing on me simply as I've collected the parts and built this watch around a vintage dial. Philosophically, this Rolex dial was made to tell the time, it's now fulfilling its purpose.

I think I'd find it more substantial on a bracelet, I've ordered a wso one (I know) but plan to attach a gen clasp if possible to match the correct period.

Maybe I will change the crystal too? this one is hard to get properly clean inside . Think I'll order a clarks and install it fresh from the packet.

  2. Thanks mate.

I dismantled and reassembled the watch today and got a much better alignment. I put the watch up for sale cos I just couldn't adjust to the smaller case size, but now it's sorted it's kind of growing on me. I think I'll try a bracelet. I've compared it to some gen pieces and mine is overall pretty accurate as far as frankens go.

  3. Ok. Take two.

Still not entirely happy with the finish. The dial sits in the case too far to the left and slightly too low. That's probably down to my poor effort in putting it together.

Think I'll hold out for a gen case and reset the dial hands and movement into it. This donor case will do for now though.

  4. If you dont mind me asking where did you source the gen dial 14270 dial, does the fact that the T Swiss lettering is being slightly cropped bother you.

I know what you mean about the cropped dial. I'm in the process of re assembling with a new movement, hopefully I can centre it better this time. I actually plan on using a gen case eventually so that problem should go.

Oh and dial was from eBay.

  5. I find just installing hands a total nightmare! Wouldn't dare then touch this keyless parts! Got a new movement and sold the last for very little difference between the two as it happens.

As a side note I also managed to secure a gen omega NATO bond strap from the local jewellers for free when I bought the Mrs a ring so will be worn on that Silky beauty from time to time.

  6. Ok so all parts arrived, put it together today and suspect I buggered the keyless when removing the stem to fit it.

Looks bloody good. So I will await a new movement and try again.

Just can't get stem to engage, can only wind it one way, movement works but hands won't move forwards after an hour of running but typical of my luck with Frankens! Gutted.

    Looks good though...

  7. I'm trying to quickly source some parts in the UK and wonder where best source would be.

I need a few dial dots

    ETA case clamps x2

    ETA 2824 magnetic cover

That's all I need, I know this reads like a want to buy, it's not my intention, its a genuine want to know where to buy. I've tried cousons but I don't need a 1000 dial dots and searching for ETA parts is nothing short of a nightmare on that website!

Tritium dial now on its way.

No plans to rush this build now I've got a case, crown and dial. I hope to get a gen swiss ETA, Clark hands and crystal, wso (or gen bezel) and a decent strap over the next couple of months.

I think I will assemble it myself although getting the correct stem length is a worry for me.

  9. Wait. You found a gen 16200 case, gen dial, gen crown and tube for less than a grand? All in with ETA movement and hands is still under a grand? That seems like a good deal. The gen 1500s I've found are over that. Not by much, but still more than that threshold.

I think DVNE was saying that If you find a 1500 for that price you should go for it.

Ok so any ideas guys on what tube to go for. I managed to source a 603 crown. JMBs case is on the way, as is the 14270 dial.

  10. I made a similar one earlier this year.

Gen 16200 case, gen crown, gen dial, Clark merc hands and a swiss 2824. I sold it to a good friend of mines and I am in the middle of gathering up parts for another build. Do you have any pics of your dial?

Interested in using a gen case, what did you use to hold the movement in place and how was stem position?

  11. See if you can find a NOS Eulit strap on the bay. I have a perlon obsession (best hot weather strap ever) and it doesn't get any better than Eulit. Not too expensive either, like $30-$70 range.

Yes that's definitelythe one im going to go for.in all my years of watches, can't believe I've missed these. Thanks.

  12. Yes just did some checking

The 14270 takes a 28mm dial as does the 114270 they each have a 36mm case (pictured above)

The 214270 has a 30mm dial and sits in a 39mm case. The dial on these now has the 'explorer' text at the bottom. That seems to e the easiest way to tell which is which.

  13. I'm at the outset of a 14270 build having had offer of a gen dial.

    So from my initial searches, I'm thinking the following recipe could be successful;

    Gen dial

    TC or Clark hands

    16200 rep ETA 2824 case

    ETA 2824.

    So tho leaves a couple of questions;

Will I need a custom dial spacer on the ETA case or is that just on a gen case?

Will I need to cut the stem length?

Any other thoughts, experience or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.
