  1. I had a white dial version and would have liked it a lot. But the 12:00 markers were not even or even parallel and the stem was too long so it would not screw down. I didn't mind the bezel paint (would have been an easy fix) and from what I understand the white dial gen was actually more of a silver/white than the plain white of the rep.

If I could get a black dial with good markers at a decent price I might buy one as I really like dive watches. It's a shame the quality was not as good as my new Ingenieur :victory:

  2. It's funny how well marketing works ;)

Seiko is older than Rolex or Omega or many of the Swiss brands (1881)

Seiko produced the first automatic chronograph and it was column wheel movement with the 6138 and 6139 in 1969 decades before Rolex had a column wheel chrono

    Seiko invented the quartz watch

Seiko produced the first all titanium watch

Seiko prodiced the first quartz dive watch

It was because Seiko brought watches that beat every Swiss maker in teram of accuracy that the COSC decided to only offer chronomoter certification to 'Swiss made' watches. Grand Seiko's actually meet a much higher accuracy standard than COSC

Seiko (and Citizen, there is some argument about it) both produced quartz watches with one second a year accuracy

Seiko has always made every single component in their watches in house including mainsprings and all lubricants and crystals and dials and...

The Springdrive is only the latest in a long history of innovation for Seiko

When the quartz revolution came and old line Swiss makers were goiing bankrupt and being bought up by Swatch and others Seiko was still producing hundreds of thousands of mechanical automatic Seiko 5's and divers a year and selling every one and turning a profit :)

It's such a shame they don't have the prestige and class and history of a company like Panerai or Rolex or Swatc... er Omega :whistling:

  3. I want that 600m diver!

It's an amazing watch. Bigger than my 300m MM, the bracelet is awesome (but then again the bracelet on a $150 Seiko Monster is better then a Sub bracelet :p ) and the sweep is just mesmerizing. I had an old Seiko 600m Professional 'Tuna Can' auto diver with the 36,600bph movement and the sweep on the Springdrive was visibly much smoother. It just glides around the dial :D In my opinion the only thing Seiko did wrong was the white GMT hand (oh yeah did I mention it's GMT too?). It can be hard to tell the time at a glance soemtimes.

  4. The design of this watch is quite elegant. What kind of movement is a spring drive? 5 K for a Seiko though ? :g: Looks like they are exploring new markets.

    Not at all ;)

Seiko has made watches in this price range and higher for decades. The Grand Seiko's and Credor Phoenix models are as good or better than any watch in their price range (IMHO). I have a Seiko Marine Master 300m diver and with the same movement (but non decorated) as in the Grand Seiko's it every bit the equal of a Sub at roughly half the price. The 600m (actually tested to 750m) Springdrive diver is an amazing watch and would cost 2-3 times the $3k price if it had a Swiss label. But the high end Seiko's have only ever been sold in Asian markets and are even hard to come by there.

The Springdrive movement has been around for a few years but is just now filtering down into sportier watches. It is a mechanical handwind or auto movement with no battery that is regulated by a crystal. It has a 72 hour power reserve and accuracy of better then +1 second a day from a mechanical movement. I have a friend who has one of the 600m divers, his gains 8-10 seconds a month :)

  5. What? A pen that can be erased? What witchcraft is this?!!!! You actually have such things in the US??? Over here in quaint merry ol' England, we only have pencils that can be erased. Next you'll be telling me you have machines that can fly, pfffff

Perhaps one of you [censored]-takers would kindly post a picture of this amazing magical pen for a simple peasant like myself....

I went to an office supply store and bought a three pack of white ink erasers for like $2 US ;)

  6. I got mine yesterday and accidentally wore it into an AD!!!

I went by a local jewlrey store that stocks Rolex, Omega, Pam and Breitling just too look around and disovered that they now stock IWC :Jumpy: The salesman was all over me and as helpful as can be and complimented me on my 'taste in watches' more than once. I did not hang around long, had to pick up my wife anyway, but anyone who thinks this rep is not good enough yet must expect perfection.

It actually looks much better today after a good scrubbing and a polishing with Flitz and it's running +3 seconds in over 24 hours :)

  7. Funny that humble Seiko (my first watch collection love) has always made 100% of their watches in house. From movements to crystals to mainsprings, and even lubricants it's ALL made by Seiko :)

Even Rolex could never claim that. They evidently outsource the mainsprings for their in-house movements...

  8. Nice bike, but you put gears on it :Jumpy:

I just finished building another single speed (my Bianchi Boss was stolen out of the house) out of a 1999 S-Works Stumpjumper. I even replaced the White Bros fork with a rigid ;)

I have a gear bike (Rocky Mountain Vertex Team) and a road bike, but am sooooooooo tempted by a 29er :D

  9. Sacramento is not much of a watch town. I've only ever seen one gen Pam and even Subs etc are pretty rare. But I do make the effort with my reps to make sure they fit me ;)

My job (newspaper) is pretty casual and I dress that way for work. I usually wear Abercrombie khakis or Chip and Pepper or Paper Denim jeans and Dieslel shirts with Puma or Diesel shoes, and drive a Saab.

I can easily pull off my Sub or GMT II or an SS Pam and never get questioned. I've actually had a number of people ask about the Rolex's, and at least in Noerthern California, the assumption seems to be that an SS Rollie is genuine but that almost all gold or gold and diamond 'bling' Rollies are all fakes!!!

But I do save my FM Conquistador for days that I wear a suit or a sportjacket :p

  10. Just quit posting pictures of that Ingenieur dammit!

I only like dive watches, not sports watches. And I don't need another rep. And I'm sure the hands are .00062mm wider or narrower than the gen, so it's no good anyway. And I would probably scratch it on a doorway the first day. And it's probably not as accurate as a G-Shock. And the metal bracelet would probably give me allergies. And...

    :Jumpy::Jumpy::Jumpy:

  11. Another question: I read an article that stated testing to 3ATM still wasn't safe for swimming (they recommened nothing short of 5), but this seemed like BS... if 3 bars=100ft, and most people don't go deeper than 6 to 8 in their pool, is 3 actually safe?

It's the difference between static pressure and dynamic pressure.

To be rated for scuba diving per ISO Standards a watch needs to be 200m water resistant. Very, very few scuba divers go down to 660 feet ;)

  12. My SS Breitling Seawolf Avenger is one of may favotire reps. Even more so since The Zigmeister re-lumed it and fixed the loose crappy bezel :D

But the all SS combo can be really heavy sometimes so I thought I would look into getting one of those cool 22mm Breitling rubber dive straps with the big BREITLING lettering in blue.

But everyhere I look on the web they are almost $200.00!!!!!!!!

At first I thought I was seeing things? Seiko's classic thick genuine rubber Z-22 strap is available for $25-30 and is a great strap. WTF is up with a $200 rubber strap?

I guess it's too much to ask, to hope there is a rep version available???

  13. Apples and oranges. :) You won't gp wrong with either but for totally different reasons. Are you looking for a rep of a multi-thousand dollar watch or a Seiko? :bangin:

    Exactly right!

I used to be a huge Seiko collector and still have a number of vintage Seiko automatic chronos and divers and I have a Marine Master 300m auto diver that I believe is a superior watch to a gen Sub for under $2000. But the watch you have pictured is a low end quartz Seiko. The quality control and fit and finish will be excellent, it will be accurate and durable and it's a nice looking watch in person. But comparing it to a rep is just comparing apples and rye bread :bangin:

For a treat sometime, do a google search on Seiko Credor Phoenix chrongraph. Stunning watches and probably my next 'gen' buy!

  14. OK, I'm not that much of a dork or a noob but i'm stumped.

I just got a truly stunning black SMP from Joshua with the correct Speedy style bracelet and it has has me stumped? I've sized every Seiko bracelet and Pam reps, and Subs and GMT's and a screw link SMP GMT and my P.O.'s and a VC Overseas and a Conquistador and even a Tag Link but all I've done so far is scratch this one :black_eye:

It seems to use pins and not screws (good) but there are no arrows to show which way the pins go out and I experimented with my screw/pin tool and could only get one pin part way out???

I'd really have to wait and take it to a watchmaker tomorrow for a simple bracelet adjustment :wounded1:
