Ferris Bueller Ubiquitous, you're my hero! Seriously-- great stuff, great pics as well. Whats the back story on that Ebel movement?

This is why I amazed you are such a (cough) fan. Having a similar history as you, I can see the "lets make computers more user-friendly/for the masses" argument, but come on, this device is a STEP BACKWARD in terms of what it can really do. While I open minded to the ONE-STEP back to go TWO-STEPS forward (with the next versions), the iPad is admittedly lacking. All I wish for is "Truth in advertising" when it comes to the device. The iPad would be like Rolex coming out with the new Submariner missing the second hand! People would still by it because it says Rolex on the dial, and has cool 904 stainless steel case, and I am sure many would justify not needing a seconds hand. Because I can still by a Note/Netbook for less money and do more, and experience 100% of the web, or just stick with the iPod Touch or iPhone. If this device was under $300, it would be worth the shortcomings. No matter what side of the fence you are on, all I can say is do your homework, don't be swayed by marketing, don't be swayed by the "mass think".

Now that looks better! I really hope the competition gives Apple a run for their money. Competition is good. Who knows, it might PUSH Apple to build a better product or the product they should have built.

Final thoughts on the CF/SD ability to go from Camera -to- Edit -to- Web. 1.) Since Asus practically invented the Netbook market with the eeePC, they have had SD card readers forever. As someone above said it is almost impossible to find a NET/NOTEbook these days that can't accept at least SD cards. 2.) My wifes G4 Powerbook from 2004 with its PCMCIA slot has the ability to read CF/SD/MMC/etc via a PCMCIA card that resides in the slot 24x7. My work provided HP Laptop has a card reader.... 3.) Finally, there is always good 'ole USB to either use with a card reader, OR simply plug the damn camera into it. You simply are not going to convince me that taking a photo on a camera, moving to an iPad, editing it on an iPad, then putting it up on the web is somehow a "great experience". It is too damn laborious. (By the time I get it to the iPad, I would have it cropped, color balanced, and on imageshack...) I do appreciate all the "work arounds" and creative solutions to solve issues on the iPad that frankly should NOT be issues if in fact this was truly a "magical, revolutionary, technological marvel". To set the record straight again, I am/was a BIG APPLE FAN. I DON'T HATE the iPad, I DON'T HATE Apple. What I do hate is Apple's Marketing of this device, and the limitations of this first version. Everyone has "workarounds" for things that should be innate to any modern computing platform, and it simply boggles my mind that everyone accepts it. (Ohh, and I am sure/agree 'consuming/reading' web content on the iPad is GREAT, I could not image 'interacting' with the web on it - for example: pecking out this post on the forum on the touch screen.)

Let me get this straight-- you took the images from your D60's memory card to some 'intermediary' space??? Spent 2$ on an app, dealt with some old school FTPing, to get them to RWG. By my estimates, not including the 1 time app purchase, this had to be a 5+ minute process. ??? Contrast this with the memory card slot in a laptop or my netbook, in which this could have been accomplished much quicker with $0 spent, and no jumping through hoops. Call me crazy, but I fail to see how this even comes close to rivaling a Note/Netbook. I can just as easily sit in front of the TV with a MacBook, or my eeePC and do it ALL (+flash games, Hulu, et. al.) Just playing devils advocate here.... Edit to add: If the iPad was sub-$200 in price, this would be "all good" IMHO Edit to add 2: By the time I type-- ftp xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx hash type binary put somefile.jpg .......My Note/Netbook would have had the image on Imageshack by now...

Looks like incandescent lighting on Silver.

Good catch Stilty, the pics I posted are for the 4 hand GMT (1675) 3 Ruby. So, yes that ring should be 'cut/ground' back even further. I guess-- long story short, buy something in you budget be it 150x, 160x, TOOL 1680 1665, and worse case grind it back to fit. I went the 1603 route, because I grabbed the whole watch for a deal, then took it to an AD and had the movement serviced while in the DJ case. I am not worried, and have the skills to pop the DW ring and grind it back as needed. In my case I have a serviced movement actually keeping COSC via an AD for LESS than what most people are selling RAW movements. What WE REALLY NEED, is someone like JMB or Stilty to create just these rings. Imagine the interchangeability options.

Ditto, stick with silver. I tried to paint one of these white for my 653x "Homage" - Nightmare. The only way to do it is to strip the lume, light sanding, then airbrush and re-lume. The other option is to go with glit for hour/minute/GMT? and a silver seconds hand. (this is what I did, the contrast between gold and silver makes the silver look white)

For guaranteed compatibility you want the FLAT ring like this (from 1500's. true TOOL Rolexs (1680, 1665, etc). Notice the 1/2 mm from the edge of the retaining ring and the base movement: The others have a date ring that extends out further then SLOPES down at the outside edge for the pie-pan dials. YOU CAN USE THESE, but you will need to remove it and grind the sloped edge back with a Dremel or other tool. Notice how the slope extends almost to the edge of the base movement. Here is the (less than optimal) sloped edge for comparison (from 160x DJs):

Yes it is, and I have a correct case back for the late 70's.

:g:Verrryyyy Interestinnnng. Are you bidding R? Is anyone bidding so as not to stomp on anyone?

Either should be fine. I am looking at building something similar that will be circa late 1970's (5.8mil serial). I have a nice white datewheel that I will most likely stick with. If it were a 'Red' I would be a little more purist. I want to say after 77/78 you are safe.

This was originally written on Jan 18th, 2010 for the RWG Newsletter. It has been locked away to the News Crew until now. (I have had some recent PM's from my WC pics, so I though I would move this here for general consumption by all RWG memebers) - Enjoy Off the Beaten Path "Having a Ball"

Actually 2846 is the slow beat version of the 2836. IIRC?

Yes that Senators 60's is a beauty too. As for the Doxa, seriously consider the "Gen". Usually on sale under $2000 they are worth it. (You could pick up a brand new 1000T for $1400). That is less than many super frankens around here. Also, the orange dial, I doubt they could rep it correctly. In person the dial is incredible.
