  1. There are some decent Cartier Tank Francaise reps out there, but stick to the plain 'bezel' ones as the diamond 'bezel' ones were only in white gold in the gen, I believe.

I would be tempted to see if you could have a rolex made up to the style you wanted. Mary can custom build any rolex you want, if I remember correctly, so drop her a line with some pics and see what she can do!

  2. TBH, unless you're crazy enough to be handing the watch over to someone to look at, 99.99% of the general public will ever know.

The WIS of this world, and those who make it their business to know the 'signs' of a well off person, may well spot it if they're eagle-eyed, but I wouldn't recommend wearing a rep in the situation where this may happen!

  3. Personally speaking, I'm busy during the day of 23rd but evening and the sunday 24th I'm a free man - the other half's away so I can go out to play and not get moaned at

There are several nice watch stores in London but I'm not sure how many are open on a sunday. But there are several 'establishments' you can visit in the evening that provide a good quality of visual pleasure ;)

Whatever you do, be prepared to be charged a fortune for everything you buy, visit, or get a ride in!! lol

  4. words have a lot more than definitions behind them. They inflect personal feelings and emotions when used. Why say the word monkey.. when you could use the word primate....

Why use the word snake instead of serpent to describe someone...??? You know the answer to your own question. It's pointless to argue why we use some words with certain connotations and other words for other connotations when in the end, they may have the exact same definition.

    Homeless vs. Vagabond vs. Hobo.

    Wine-o vs. Alcoholic

    Booze vs. Alcoholic beverage etc.

I think I agree with this - much as I don't like the word 'fake', that is only because of the connotations it has - i.e. trying to be something it's not. A replica is pretty much doing the same thing, but replica sounds like some effort has gone into making it :)

So, use what words you will. The fact remains that those who think that fakes are all 'cheap and nasty' would be shocked to find out the level of quality that we have nowadays ;):tu:

  5. Have you considered what this stuff will do when it's transferred through your skin and got into your body? ;):p

Nanotechnology is great but what I resent about it is that it's being rolled out by companies making big money, with little or no long term testing as to its effects on the human body!

  6. You might need to get the crystal pressed in, which is probably beyond doing at home unless you have a crystal press!

Which continent are you on? There are a few people on the boards who will work on it, or you could source a local watchsmith who might take it on if you say it was a gift and it has sentimental value :)

  7. For many people, a rolex will be a mark of something significant, such as a birthday or an event, in the same way that some people get tattoos - these people are the ones I think are nicest to know as, with them, there is a story behind the purchase that is interesting to find out :)

I think the worst type of rolex (or any 'brand' watch) is someone vacuous enough to buy it because he/she thinks it will impress people. These are the people who usually are the least impressive when you meet them because they are usually arrogant douchebags!

I've had quite an interesting journey with Rolex, myself - I always used to hate them as I thought they were only bought by the latter type of people, and were therefore not a watch that I wanted to own. Since learning about reps, I've realised the history behind them, and the fact that the vintage stuff is cool because it was simply designed to be a tool rather than a statement to the world about how much money (or credit...) you have. So, as above, I'm veering more towards vintage cool than blatant in your face modern stuff and the overdone (IMHO) black submariner.

That said, I have got the blue ceramic sub from BK because I wear a lot of blue and I love the fact it's different B) and I WILL have a BK YM when I have some cash! lol

Rolex really must be credited with being a good marketing company. The fact that they feel they can abandon their long time customers looking to service vintage gens worth $$$$$, just so that they can concentrate on maximising market share in what is, now, pretty much just a fashion industry, speaks volumes to me. I would therefore say that there are very few modern rolex that will increase in value the same way that the vintage ones have - after all, where's the story behind the modern DSSD? or a oversize DJ/DD? They are just marketing ploys that have come too late to the game now the big watch craze is fading. (Although perhaps they might discontinue the line with the result being that the oversize will be rare and valuable in the future? Who knows, I wouldn't bet on it though... lol)

So... I'm not sure where I'm going with this really :bangin::lol: but I would probably summarise by saying that Rolex now is about marketing over quality or practicality/fitness for purpose, and that they seem to be focusing on maximising profit now rather than pushing the boundaries forward for the long term benefit and advancement of the brand and watches in general. I think this will be to their long term detriment as, ultimately, people feel secure in knowing that if they ever were in a difficult financial situation, they could sell their Rolex for a price not far off what they paid. If every man and his dog has a rolex in the future, and they're not collectible in the same way as the vintage ones are now, the market will drop off and Rolex will become like a korean car manufacturer - capable but overpriced for the quality, and ultimately worth little in the secondhand market, therefore not something that a discerning buyer will want to purchase new.
