  1. So, lots of different advices here.

I want a new one too and save some money for it.

I still wonder if a Canon 350D (a little cheaper) or a 400D is "a better choice" than a Nikon D40 (both are the same price).

The choice between both brands is a matter of marketing I suppose...

    Any preferences?

We have both at work... actually we have a D70 and a canon 10D but everyone just grabs the 10D because the user interface is easier to navigate.

I used the canon's primarily, but for 1 year, i was stuck with the d70. it's a nice camera, but i still like the ease of use on teh canons'. I had a great lens on the nikon tho - one of them 18-35mm lenses - nice and heavy grade 1500 dollar lens, shoots so clear and fast!

Dont get me wrong, the D70 (or d40) are great cameras... and if you already have a stock of Nikon lenses, then its a no-brainer. But for people new to teh SLR's, i have to say the canon's user friendliness wins.

Go check out a rebel and a nikon. see where u can navigate to change ISO's or set manual features or white balance or just browse the menus in general. see which ones u prefer? for me shooting outside during split second decisions, i need to know where all my camera functions are.

In terms of grip, if you have larger hands, the d40 wins over canon rebels - that is if you are ok with the menu system on nikon. Otherwise, both cameras with good lens setups shoot pretty much the same. some little minor contrasts here and there and saturations blah blah blah...

not to spam the boards with images all the time, but these were taken at an aquarium with real low light. Shot with that F4 lens but with image stabilizer. Those things do wonders...

  2. you dont need to buy a macro lens. just buy the canon 50mm 1.8f lens $90cdn. very good lens and most people eventually get one in their kit for portraits and such anyways..then buy "kenko extension tubes" $80 on ebay this gets you the same macro ability with out the $600 price and its just as good. google it. dont second guess your 400d purchase.

yeah dont second guess the rebels or its higher brethren. what really counts is looking for the good lenses. Like the 50mm 1.8 is a kick ass lense for the price. The cheaper 200 dollar lenses are pieces of junk - low contrast, low sharpness, bad build quality - but i gotta say that 50mm 1.8 is an exception. It's better to invest in a good lense because that's what you'll keep for a long time.

  3. hmmm

get a canon 40D and a 24-70L lens. Once you get an L lens, you never go back :D actually once you invest in good lenses, they stay with you for life - unless you BREAK it :D

I picked up a 24-105 L f4 lens and it does a fantastic job. Was going to upgrade my 10D, but the new lens really makes wonders.

    yaaay that's 3000 dollars!

But like mr. Pug said, u can make do with any point and shoot, it's the photographer that really counts. I've seen amazing macro work with just a small P&S nikon.

well... actually, my 2 cents: pickup any canon - the interface is more user friendly. I've been hearing more and more P&S cameras tho are eliminating full manual control :( can't control shutter speed/fStop :( :( :( my wife's new canon Elph has zero control over shutter speed/fstop :(

As for macro, here's one a shot with the L lens and a couple screwon close-up lenses on the front of it:

  4. I didn't realize there was a reduced version of this watch! The watch sold for $1,425.00.

    Omegaunit

the watch retails brand new for 1800

yup, they have a speedy reduced - note the hour markers are tagged with minutes.

Ther'es a rep of it lying around, but it's abit... inaccurate:

  5. Hi guys,

i managed to get hold of a gen LV dial for my sub project and if anyone is going to get close enough to call your watch out on the rehaut the dial will give it away first.

The font on the gen dial is far sharper and the black paint more glossy but the biggest giveaway is the lume. Is has a texture and eveness that even the best reps cannot replicate and of course it glows like a cats eye even in low light.

The dial on my Josh "perfect" sub is one of the best i've seen on a rep but looks crap compared to the gen. But of course its a fraction of the price so not surprising really...

thanks for looking, gen dial is on the left

hey have you also noticed that the fonts on the gen are raised more? They do a nice job baking the fonts onto the dial.

  6. IMO you should have stuck with the original bezel as the new insert has much thinner numbers than the original Noob insert and the Gen.

yeah lesson learned. I was fixated with the crappy pearl. too late now, didnt notice the insert font until after i got my gen to compare.

What i should have done was just swap pearls  u win some u lose some :o

  7. here's my noobie sub from TTK with aftermarket bezel and CG mod. just need new crown and tube :)

next to a gen LV sub

    gen on right

    LV_NOOB_004.jpg

only noticeable difference now is bezel lip and the sweep. If u watn smoother sweep like gen, might as well go with ETA!

noobie is a great starter rollie!

  8. no kidding here.. but even the rehaut depth unless u have it side by side.. its very hard to tell (especially in real life where u stare at it from a distance).. but the bezel is thicker on the gen correct? :)

Correct! it sticks out ever so slightly more.

Hence the reason why aftermarket bezels need some sanding.

But i heard from some gen rollie forums that even thte bezel between the LV and regular sub differs in size slightly... dunno if that guy who stated that is true cuz i've seen some LVs with gen black inserts.

  9. it's a gen, but it's a 42.5 (look at the bezel vs the 45 and the date placement) - plus on the 42's their pearls aren't accurate. This has the AR, the serials, the numbers on the clasp, and even has the Red dot on the caseback to indicate it hasnt been serviced yet.

Gen 42.5 pumpkin! but the guy listed it as a 45 :? maybe he's including the crown? :)

  10. i wear reps with crappy fonts, or fantasy reps (i'm still trying to get that damn mini fiddy), or reps i just like (like the speedy reduced which is horribly wrong from the gen).

I wear it cuz i like the watch. If i dont like the crown, i'll swap it out. these things are based on my personal preferences. If i want something close to gen, that's a rep, regardless of its fault. It's CLOSE enough. i'm happy enough. If not, i go out and buy a gen?

When i bought the 42mm PO, i was REALLY happy with the rep. Then little things popped up here and there that i realized i just want the gen... so out i went, saved up for 3-5 months, and picked up a gen :)

  11. sorry i'll let you guys get back to watch talk in a bit,

i just wanted to point out that i'm a mod on another forum and when the TTK fiasco hit, we suspended him from his section till further notice (basically filling out the long awaited orders i guess).

What ensued then was what basically happened here: threats! They weren't fabricated. a simple "I dont agree with you." woulda sufficed, but personal threats of what he's gonna do to you or worse is uncalled for.

unless all the rep boards are owned by the same guy and all the mods are mysteriously working with each other for the pure joy of creating drama so that it can distract you all from our real purpose of draining your bank accounts for 1 MILLION dollars! MUhahaha... haaaaaaaaaaa

    dr_evil_1.jpg

anyways, i'll leave it at that. i dont want to smear my poo all over the place

    SO...

    back to the watch talk!

    yeah, the breaitling heritage rocks...

but man, i have girly wrists :(
