  1. I wouldnt, unless I was giving it to someone like the people who post on this board.

You're going to look real silly when the bezel of that "gen" rolex falls off your girlfriend's wrist at the mall.

  2. I am by no means from a rich family, and don't have a cent to donate to these schools (we would struggle just to pay the tuition!!!). I had the perfect profile of a successful applicant, perfect LSAT score, perfect undergraduate and graduate records along with solid references and leadership activities. That's what I detest about American schools, everything seems to be so prejudiced in my opinion.

Well, keep in mind that all the people who get scores like yours apply to the same places. The vast majority of the prejudice in the American system is a result of affirmative action, and other quotes designed at promoting diversity within the student body. Im not saying its a bad thing, but I think legacy is a much smaller part of the favoritism going on in US schools.

  3. Did anyone here ever apply for law school in the United States? I'm curious, as I applied for American law schools 2 years ago, and got flat rejections from everything I applied for.

    I applied for:

    - Harvard

    - Columbia

    - Stanford

    - Cornell

I wasn't directly rejected from Cornell, I was waitlisted and never heard back from them again. I don't understand how I was rejected, as I scored a perfect 180 on the LSAT, and had strong reference letters from my employer and research partner at the University of Toronto. In addition, according to the LSDAS I had a Cumulative GPA of 4.00. And yet all this still wasn't good enough, I'm still wondering to myself what may have went wrong. I'm thinking of sending in another application for the same law schools later this year, and if I'm admitted specifically to Harvard, to request a 2 year deferral. I want to use my LSAT score while it's still valid in the eyes of many law schools.

Hmm, that is strange. You should have applied to schools like Georgetown, UPenn, or Univ of Chicago as safety schools (I went to Penn & UChi, but not for law). Perhaps there was something about your personal statement that they did not like... That being said, your scores and GPA kick ass. I would consider rewriting your personal statement (talk about how you want to help the poor) and submit every year your LSAT score is valid.

Also, if you have ever been arrested for ANYTHING, you must disclose it to US law schools because of the American Bar background checks. Any lying is grounds for automatic rejection.

  4. This is just a small story I relate as I have not had this happen to me before. I was at a fund raiser last week at a fine hotel on Les Champs-Elysees. The Americans Women Group in Paris did this to raise money for charity. It was a wine auction where everything was donated and a person from Sotheby's auctioned off the wines.

I wore my Fiddy at the event. About half way through the reception a well dressed elderly man approached me and pointed to my wrist. He asked if he could see it and I showed it to him on my wrist. From the look on his face it was obvious he was in great admiration of my watch and knew exactly what it was. He asked if I had any other Panerai and I said yes. He said 'let me guess - a Luminor" to which I said yes I do. He said "of course - what else".

The moment was too short to go into the fact it was a rep but it was the first time anyone has ever recognized my Panerai and knew what it was. Kind of a neat moment.

Cool story. Ive been involved with a few political consulting firms in Washington for sometime, and the watch of choice among political insiders is definately Panerai. A well known political consultant showed me his collection once, and it was quite something. He had about $200k in Panerai and IWC peices.

  5. so, i took the car in for an oil change and while i was screwing around waiting i headed into a local jewelry store that carries rolex cartier i was wearing my BCE. anyway i was dressed like a total scrub, from the gym basketball shorts, tshirt, baseball hat - ipod headset. I was sporting the maui jim's though

anyway, i walk around just to check things out - the lady takes one quick glance at the watch - Hi, can i get you something to try on? Would you like a beverage, some coke, or coffee?

    :)

I tried on a 2 tone sub - they are heavier than i thought :)

anyway made me chuckle. I be if anyone else was in the store they would have said - HUH? oh, :)

just a quick fun story. Its nice to be treated nice, even when you dress like a bumb - or as i like to consider it - comfortably

Do you watch the show Curb Your Enthusiasm? In one of the episodes, Larry David goes to a jewelry store to buy a bracelet for his wife, but he is wearing his "gym clothes." (he looked like [censored]) When he walks up to the door of the jewelry store, the woman working there notices what he is wearing and immediately locks the door thinking he is a street bum

kinda the opposite situation of yours :)

  6. Beautiful bikes! But........... how do you make them go with no pedals? :g:

Clipless pedals (ironic name since you have to clip them to the bottom of your cycling shoes) are never sold with the bike. Since the majority of road bikers use these clipless pedals, it is pointless to include generic pedals you would see on any old bike (the type of pedal you are probably familar with). So it is just easier to not include pedals with the bike. If generic pedals are include, these are seen more as a temporary pedal for those new to the sport who are uncomfortable with clipping their shoes into their pedals. A more experienced rider will replace it immediately.

  7. Lets get an off topic thread going showing all the bitchin' bikes we ride!

Now, we're talking! I only do road biking, and I never do it for commuting. I appreciate the sport of cycling, and it is great exercise.

    I have two road bikes.

One is a Colnago Extreme C. This is the commerical version of the bike used by the Rabobank team back in the 2005 tour de france.

I also have a Trek 1400 2006 version. I think this is the best value road bike out there.

  8. I've been traveling to China for work very very regularly. I was in factory where one of the line managers had a different rep on every day, and not rollies, I'm talkin' Panerai, HBB, IWC, Vacheron, Jeager, etc. Some of them horrible horrible fantasy watches, but still ticking and still lovely in their own way. One day I pointed to his wrist and tried to mime how cool his watches are. I managed to determine he has a buddy who owns a watch shop and he gets his at price. When I asked him if I could see him the next day (I was leaving shorlty) he gave me the PAM-fantasy right of his wrist! He refused to be compensated saying, in English "Now friends," before he walked away.

I love stories like this. I try to have as many converstations like this as I can when abroad (as long as the environment is safe), especially on business trips. You never know what drives people until you ask. Plus, I like to debunk stereotypes of Americans one person at a time. B)

  9. I'd just wear a Casio for sports like that. There are some terrific Pathfinders that have brilliant features like barometric pressure (i.e.: is it going to rain on your parade), elevation, countdown timers, compass, multiple time zones, et al. The latest generation is solar powered. I love my old Pathfinder, but mine is the pre-solar version and it takes something like 5 batteries. I used mine in the military--it's a very durable watch, and despite the abuse it only has little bits and pieces missing here and there. Despite this, all functions work perfectly. Anyway, perfect for a cyclist IMHO.

If it was me, Id go with something like that too. But, again, I dont wear a watch at all when cycling.

I know Lance wore a watch with a metal bracelet, at least during some parts, of the tour de france. Similiar to what Jeff G said, I think a watch is bothersome, espeically if it has a steel bracelet.

I have a poster where the watch is almost full size, but half of it is cut off by another cyclists handle bars so I cant make out what brand. Im sure some of the experts here could itentify it. Anyway, heres a little proof that Lance is A-OK with wearing watching while riding :thumbsupsmileyanim:
