  1. Bah since we are going to have it out on this one.... J&A are claiming that the "natural development and interpretation" as you put it of the words "ETA" and "Superlume" have changed. I believe the "development and interpretation" of those words has not changed. That makes it a semantic argument

Yes, they are claiming that it was a natural development, but IT WAS NOT. It was deliberate.

I have a meeting in 2 minutes, so I have to let this be. Lets just agree to disagree :thumbsupsmileyanim:

  2. I never said it was not deliberate; I actually implied the opposite if you read the entire thread. I see the problem here - you just don't like the word semantics. It is a semantics issue because they are claiming an copy of an ETA is an Asian ETA which goes to the meaning of... oh nevermind you can't please everyone. If you go by the dictionary it is the correct term to use.

Its such a stupid arguement, but I couldnt help but ask my neighbor about this (he has a PhD in Lingustics), and he believes samantics to be the natural development and interpretation by classifying and examining changes in meaning and form. If you DELIBERATELY classify something inaccurately, it is not a development in samantics. Rather, it is false rhetoric. Whereas, saying your are "drunk" vs. "[censored]" is a matter of samantics. They are both the same thing, but labeled differently.

And, I know you never said it was not deliberate, thats why I brought this up. I cant believe I spent this much time on this haha

  3. This is a small point but I am right...

Semantics is "The relationships of characters or groups of characters to their meanings." I think "ETA," "Superlume," and "sapphire" all have very specific meanings attached. They are being used (incorrectly) as adverbs here. It is a semantics issue - should dealers be using ETA in this new way? I think not.

Yea, I understand your point, but semantics implies that the distinction between the two is trivial. Like many of the examples given (buying a suit, going to the grocery store, etc), the distinction between the two is not trivial. If you bought a product thinking it was one thing (Swiss ETA), and it turns out to be completely different (Asia Copy), would you say it was just semantics? I contend that the descriptions are not just a different interpretations of meanings; rather, the descriptions are intended to misled to increase sales. They know what they are doing; it is deliberate.

  4. I always considered "ETA movement" and "superlume" to be nouns not adjectives.

This means if I said a watch had "superlume" it would have this substance applied to it (noun). Not that the watch had "SUPER LUME !!!!!!!!!!!!!" (adjective).

Likewise, I thought ETA had something to do with this company (noun). Not an adjective.

This would make an interesting academic study. "Converting nouns into adjectives for fun and profit!"

    edited for typo.

Like when Republican speechwriters use "Democrat Congress" instead of proper "Democratic Congress."(using a noun when there should be a adjective) They use "Democrat" instead of "Democratic" because focus groups associate "Democratic" with voting, nationalism, democracy, etc.

  5. Ive always liked watches, but my interest has only started to peak within the last 6-12 months. I was planning on going to a Rolex AD later this week, and I would like to get a quick clarification so I dont look like an idiot haha.

When referring to a model number, like 16610, is it said 16-6-10? or...?

    :stretcher:

  6. :animal_rooster:

over and over again the same storys...

for 2 years a friend told me, that he has order more than 30 watches without problems. So i have ordered 2 watches and the 2nd was held from german customs. I told this to a friend and he means that is only a bad luck... no more. He has ordered also a watch and customs held is first watch, too.

2 years later all poeple ask me again: "we order so so many watches without problems." So i have try it again. First watch from Josh arrived savely and the second watch HELD BY CUSTOMS.

3 watches on customs? And all 3 to different adress and from different dealers?

woooooow what a bad luck :black_eye:

I get the impression that the German customs is the toughest in the world, at least for watches. Is that a fair statement?

  7. Thanks for the new background :thumbsupsmileyanim:

Also, when I first got a sub, the size overwhelmed me, but I got used to it. After wearing a PAM 217 (same size as the 1950 shown above), the sub felt small to me. So from my experiences, Ive noticed that you get used to the larger sizes pretty quickly.

  8. Some of these reps being sold on Ebay are so fake, you'd think the person being ripped off would someday realize it. Is there something this person can do? Report it to ebay? Report it to CC company? Or is the person just out a few grand? I would hate to be ripped off on ebay, but the buyer definately needs to do their homework before bidding.

  9. 1. Datejust

    2. Paul

    3. I sold it a few months after I bought it.*

*EDIT: I just want to clarify that I did not sell it for quality reasons. Basically, I randomly picked one of the $100 watches just to see if it would arrive here because I was still skeptical of the entire rep market.

  10. I agree that you should not call out someone's rep in public, but I did it once while drunk haha. I was at a party and I whispered to my friend "that guy is wearing a fake Rolex." But I was drunk and said it much louded than I thought, and Im pretty sure he overheard. O well, at least I didnt stand on a chair and announce it to everyone
