"Sir, is that a vintage rolex 5512 on your wrist, powered by the famous calibre 1570 that is currently selling for $20,000?"

No, it is a new MBK with the famous ETA 2879 that goes for about $1000."

What may I ask is the difference?"

    "Not much,   :animal_rooster:   at all."

"Sir, is that a vintage 1963 Land Rover Series 2A you're driving, with cross-your-fingers drum brakes and powered by the 2.25L petrol engine making 65 horsepower?"

"No, it is an aftermarket galvanized chassis with a turbo-diesel Mercedes engine, on Range Rover axles with disc brakes, power steering and coil suspension, and uses 2 original body panels and steering wheel."

What may I ask is the difference?"

"It's much faster and safer.  Otherwise it looks identical."

  2. When you find your new insert I can recommend an adhesive to hold it in place.

Some guy on eBay sells circular 3M Adhesive stickers pre-punched to fit watch bezels.  Peel off the protective backing, punch out the donut hole, put the adhesive ring in place (it's VERY thin and gummy) and place your insert on the adhesive.  You'll ruin a few getting it right, but a 10-pack was like $5 and they work great.

  3. I had an interesting email back-and-forth in the last couple months with a very well known vintage Rolex expert and I suggested many of the pieces that show up at GTGs wore aftermarket parts disguised to look distressed and old, precisely because of the lack of genuine parts.  I said IMO that is no reason to retire a watch.  We had to agree to disagree.  I think he's in for a rude awakening.

  4. I have a perfect Tall5 redtriangle insert from Crownartcustoms. That is the most accurate one.

Wow, I’d like to see a pic of that. I have a gen MkII on the Big Gonzo and it’s crumbling like the metal substrate was rolled out wrong or something.
  5. Curious,

Adding sapphire and Luminova to a vintage watch would ruin it. Would you replace the carburetors with fuel injection on a 60s Pontiac “Six Pack”? Would you put an automatic transmission in a 60s Shelby Cobra? Would you drop an electric motor in a Model A Ford?

These old things are appreciated as throwbacks to earlier years precisely of their anachronistic parts and quirks. That’s why people search for years to find the right plastic crystal for their watch and happily pay hundreds of dollars for it.

    Newer is not always better.

  6. Exactly right. There is ONE Phong, like there used to be ONE Maria and he wouldn’t make time to educate you. “HI I need a 6538 case engraved with this serial number and a faded no hash marks red triangle insert, lightly aged.” He’d reply with a price and when you sent payment your were in his work queue. No chit chat.

He’s actually a pretty good watchmaker and I needed something tricky done that had stumped 3 other guys. I took the chance and said “I have this problem, 3 other people said it can’t be done” and he said “send it to me” and he did it.

Compared to Minh Quy this is kid gloves treatment.
