  1. Thank you all for such a quick and comprehensive response. I guess that clears that one up.

I have sent an email to Jay at Silix explaining the situation and we'll see what he says. It was sold on his website as a genuine ETA 2892 and I asked him three time if he could guarantee it was genuine....three times he said yes it was the genuine article.

I hope he was just as unknowing as me in this. We shall see.

Thanks again to all that helped.

  2. I've just bought this Franck Muller Conquistador from a well respected dealer. He assured me that this was the rare version with the 2892-2 ETA mechanism. It even has the ETA stamp as you can see from the images below.

A respected forum member emailed me to tell me it's a Seagull ST18 and not an ETA.

Please can you have a look and let me know your thoughts?

As this is such a famous and well loved mechanism I am hoping someone will be able to tell me before I send the heavies around to the dealer - he told me it was a genuine mechanism and I believed him because of the ETA stamps.

Let me know what you think...

  3. Yes, but they are not great quality. You can pick one up for about $100 on iOffer. I would recommend doing this as they are very good for the money. Go for any dealer with good feedback. If it's a chrono you're after use Ufanta -he's a good guy.

Nobody knows why our dealers haven't sorted out the factorys and got a decent version of these. Maybe they will, but i'm not so sure.

  4. Just to point out. It seems that even the latest has some problem with the Bell@Ross lettering on the dial. The @ should be centered just below the 2 of "12" marker. It is too far left in the rep. This screams rep in your face. Too obvious a flaw.

I know i'm being pedantic but I can't help myself ;) . If you look at the Bell & Ross website the '&' is not centred just below the 2 of 12, it is slightly to the right. While I agree that the rep is not exact the difference is less than half a millimetre from the gen. I'm not sure it screams rep - unless your job is putting them together at the B&R factory.

  5. The former South African Recconnaissance units were among the most hard core, well drilled soldiers anywhere in the world. Many are still sought out and a large number went on to serve in the mercenary group Executive Outcomes which was SA / London based (formed by former SA Recces) and who were often hired by governments (incl US and UK) to go in where they wouldnt dare. Trained in a constant state of war what was not only the South African townships - much like the SAS and Northern Ireland - but through constant clandestine government action in neighboring civil wars in Rhodesia, Angola and Mozambique. All part of the former governments regional destabalization campaign. They used to be referred to as silent wars but make no mistake, SA was a country at war for the better half of 30 years.

    The motto:

    The Special Forces Operator

I am a Special Forces Operator

I will go where others fear to go

I will do what others cannot do

I will face the impossible, and triumph

    Always

I seek neither fame not glory

I seek neither medals nor praise

I seek only the acknowledgement of my Brother Operators

For they alone can judge me

And to be counted amongst them is my greatest Honour

I will never dishonour my Brothers

Or the name of Special Forces

I will never turn away from any challenge

I will face anything, and succeed

Nothing will stop me, save Death

And even this will be temporary

For my memory will spur my Brothers on

    I will, at all times

Uphold the principles that guide us

    Duty, Honour and Loyalty

The highest code of Morals, Principles and Ethics

I will never abandon my post

    Or turn from my duty

    No matter the consequences

I will always remember my Brothers

Who have made the Supreme Sacrifice

They will be with me at all times

    In my thoughts and prayers

Their Deeds will not go unrecorded

And their Songs will not go unsung

    Their memory will inspire me

    Constantly

I know that wherever I am

    Whatever the situation

I am always in my Brothers

  6. In all seriousness, since this is a purely opinion based thread, I would have to say the Delta Force operators would have to be the best, that is, if we are sticking to the topic of the best special forces/ops. This group is made up of the best of the best from U.S.N. Seals, Army Rangers, Marine Recon, USAF, and Army Special Forces. These guys are the cream that has risen to the top of their respected units. I would still fear having to face the forces of the Ugandan Liberation Front when machete to machete combat is concerned. These guys weild a mean blade. :thumbsupsmileyanim:

They didn't do very well in Iran 1980 or Somalia 1993. ;)

  7. How about "tinting" the white numbers with some sort of gray wash" I'm not sure what we would use but I think it could work. Any ideas??

I've been thinking about this this week and it could be done with a grey felt tip from an art shop. My local one does packs of 5 with varying shades of grey from light to almost black. I think that would do it.

  8. Just received an all ceramic chanel J12 chrono with jap quartz from a respected dealer.

There are a couple of things wrong with it which I can definitely live with - firstly the bezel is just slightly misaligned. Apparently this cannot really be adjusted and I don't want to send it back because of that.

The thing that I have noticed is that on the front the dial is wrong.

    The dial should say

    CHANEL

    J12

    Automatic

    Above the hands and then

    OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED CHRONOMETER

    around the subdial at '6'

Mine doesn't say Automatic (I can live with this)

    then it says

    CHRONOGRAPHTIME

    at 6!!!

Has anyone else got one like this. What do you think? It's a horrible mistake, but maybe a lot of them are like that. Will people really notice?

    What do you think?

  9. If honey brown is okay, you can get straps for the 100XL non chrono from a guy named Tony on Timezone. Google it. They are imitation croc, but far nicer than the rep straps. No comparison. And for $80 you can't go wrong. I waited almost 7 months for my HKT strap. The gen straps are very expensive - well over 200 if memory serves.

Found the guy on Timezone - just what I wanted.

Thanks for all the help. :D
