  1. Thanks guys. I just put a coat of clear satin on it.

When fooling around with this one I heated it in a small oven at 175 deg between coats of clear. I noticed that if I didn't let the part cool down between coats then cracks ran all over the surface. Some of you guys fooling with vintage stuff may find this useful.

I'll bet you could heat up a Vintage Rolex dial, shoot it with some clear and get some cool effects if you wanted to risk it. The only thing about a Rolex dial is that if you screwed it up you couldn't fix it.

  2. Don't know him, but read that article months ago--fascinating. The amount of $$$ that guy's got in his shop tied up in machinery is astounding.

    Not really.

Add another $500 in tooling and about the same for a Taig or shurline lathe and you could do what he does and much more. IF you had the skills.

His skills and knowledge of engineering are astounding!!

Someday I'm gonna get one of those little buggers! It's a friggin' 4 axis also. If you know what one can do, well, you know what one can do :D

  3. Thanks guys! I didn't mean to hijack, just pointing out how much fun these cheap watches can be :victory:

The case distressing is sort of an evolved thing. One of the old hands here, maybe Nanuq or Ubiquitous, got me rolling on the distressing thing. I look at pics of gens and just try to emulate that. If you look at pics of old gens it's usually more of a "burnished" finished than just scratched up. You have to scratch it up, polish, (I use a buffer on a dremel) scratch, polish, etc. until you get the patina. I use files, sandpaper and the dremel for beating them up. It actually takes a little time to get them looking old.

    Here's another of my favorites:
