  1. Not those 12th man wannabes... The true 12th Man - Texas A&M.

I'm thinking of taking the GMT hand and painting it maroon, rubbing/polishing off the orange Explorer text on the dial, painting the bezel numbers maroon and finish it off with a coat of matte clear coat on the dial. Latter I might remove the CGs and put on a 7mm crown.

LOL somehow I knew based on location you may respond that way I am on the road for work so sporting all my Seahawks gear on travel days. Don't like to wear my good suits on planes and airports so always wear sweat suits. Even working the Nike Seahawks shoes and of course field ready # 12 jersey. So first stop Wed was in San Fran thought I was going to get mugged and jacked for my Rolex. Lucky I am big guy or could have been bad. You should have seen some of the glares I got at SF airport

  2. I buy old Revos, Julbos and Vuarnets, with the true glass lenses, on fleabay for $25 to $75 a pair. It's worth it to me.

ah the good old 80's glasses. I have more vintage sunglasses than watches-at least today. Lately buying more watches than glasses. Love the old school Revos and Vuanets and Ray Bans. Although some were pretty expensive.

  3. As much as I agree about waiting for the next version it has proven lately that the next version isn't always the best. In my opinion a bk v2 ceramic would hold it's weight for many years to come against any out of the box ceramic reps in the near future. bk addresses the issues on his watches were as the next version may correct some flaws but create new flaws that were not an issue in the past watches. Good luck on your buying decision and let us know what you decide!

+1 I ordered both and like both but the BK sub c looks like the new sub in the store if that is what you are after. TC a beauty but more vintage look

  4. Isn't BK's work only useful when things aren't aligned to begin with? He does use the swiss version so I suppose it may be worth the additional $200 all-in to get..

What could actually be done about the crystal - remove the AR?

For me it was worth the extra coin.  I do not really work on my watches...yet, so nice to have everything lined up by a pro.  BK great to work with and his work is top notch.  Responsive, helpful and quick.  I am no expert, just like watches, since it is winter cannot really evaluate outside of crappy office lighting conditions, been cloudy here for weeks.  Be able to tell better once weather improves and I can put the top down and go for a drive--and that is when I can really put it to the test.  I can see the difference between the crystals pretty good in the car on sunny day with top down.

  5. Suggest you buy a MBW such as a great white SD. Send it out to be modded lightly.....new insert and pearl, trim the CG, drill out the lug holes, new crystal, maybe a gen crown and tube. Beautiful. I have MBW I bought from TTK that are just gorgeous....great white SD and a 1680 single red. Both modded and so nice. The cartel versions are crap in comparison.

thanks for replying help me out a little mbw? See that mentioned in other posts but when I searched... Nothing. I have seen a couple of Frankens that I loved but were already sold by time I saw them. Don't mind paying for right unit and with my limited knowledge and contacts and just starting to mess with my watches more likely to try and find one that is done. I do have something going on the bond sub with another member so now really looking for the GMT Pepsi. May just post in the WTB section and see what turns up

    Thanks for the help

  6. Only been here a short while so a NOOB.  Really like the modern Rolex, but man lately after seeing all the vintage stuff, really want a 6542 and/or some kind of Bond Sub.  I am obsessed now, think about a vintage Rolex all the time.....on line gathering information.....shopping.....

    Something like these

  7. I have the Noob Sub C v2  that BK worked his majic on and love the watch, but does tend to have a slight hue on the cyclops esecially at the office with the overhead flourescents.  Bracelet is top notch, nicer than my old gen Sub bracelet.  Overall very happy with it and the work BK did on it.

  8. Yes, I agree.  I was close the pulling the string on a $1250 scam job on line when I found this place.  Got 2 great watches for about what that one POS would have cost me.  So in my mind this place saved me a ton of money already, so paying $5 a month is a no brainer.  Even though I am a noob, think it is important to support the cause, especially since I plan on sticking around.  Finding good deals on quality merchadise is one thing, but the other benefit is all the knowledge/information and sharing of ideas--not to mention starting to develop relatioships with other members which is cool.  5$ a month is a great deal for all that. :pimp:

  9. If you want it done right, either do it yourself or find someone who knows what they are doing and have them put a watch together for you. Other than these two options, you are usually better off to buy a watch already put together.

Imho it is not a good idea to buy a complete high priced watch with genuine movement from China etc because if you have to send it back the risk is simply too great...loss, damage, mia in customs etc with NO recourse. I learned this the hard way.

The 'Frankenstein' end of this twisted hobby is populated mostly by participants who can do most (or all) of the work themselves or know someone who can. Learning to work on watches is a slooow agonizing process and if you ever decide to learn the basics...r/r movements, change dials and hands, install case tubes, crowns, crystals etc, this can be learned in a year or two. Getting into cleaning movements will take a little longer and learning to machine parts adds to the time involved.

After working on watches for a while you will soon see that the main problem facing small time repair and hobby guys today = No Parts For You!   Sad but true.

For the reasons above, a low hassle/high quality watch might be an MBK 5513 or 1680 with a freshly serviced Eta 2846 in it to begin with. It will probably come with some sort of UFO movement stuffed in it so you will have to round up the 2846 and have it installed.

For a modern rolex...a TC 16610 is not a bad choice but be on the lookout for a Swiss Eta for when the etaclone goes toes up.

Rolex chronograph projects with Val 72 etc are bottomless pits unless you have plenty $$ to throw around.

    Good luck!  :good:

Tried searching MBK 5513, nothing comes up.  Have seen some posted in the sales forum but always sold before I see them.  Where might I find these?  Appreciate any direction here.

  10. Welcome, you should be happy with these choices, I especially like the TC.  I too mainly only looked at gens, bought a couple of poor reps back in early 2000's but was not impressed so went back to buying gens.  Found this place a few weeks ago and cannot stop reading, learning, and ordering.  Very happy with the units I have received so far and have 2 more on the way.  You can really learn a lot here.
