Got to Agree I'm afraid. I have been talking to the Cartel boys to see if they can finally offer a 1675/1655 that resembles the gen. You can use the existing cartel 1655 case but you will need to remove a lot of metal to get the CG's remotely close to the gen.

Good work Denimhead. I would be all over a 1675 if they produce something that at least has the potential to be acurate. In fact acurate vintage Rolex cases in general would be welcome.

  2. Released at Basel World 2016, as far as I am aware it is not replicated yet. Hopefully only a matter of time as I would also like one. Gold plating on modern replicas is better than it used to be. The weight difference between a plated watch and a solid gold one is a big tell if such things bother you. Many vintage watches were gold plated, it has taken decades of use to wear the plating. Treat it as a dress watch not a tool watch and it should be fine.

  3. There is a special feel to this little community. I have developed a great deal of faith in the decency of the regular posters, yourself included Micky. Unfortunately the world is mostly not like that and many people see a degree of deception as acceptable. I am quietly looking out for a birth year 5513, I'm not in a rush but seriously intend to buy one. Even on the webpages of well known dealers I see adverts which wax on about the condition of the dial, without ever actually disclosing that it is a later service dial and not gilt. I also see red subs, where the dial may well be genuine, but the case number puts it squarely into the white sub period. Only because I have gained a ton of knowledge here am I able to see such things.

  4. I don't know, but maybe the buyer didn't get suckered, maybe they can read and know what they have got. If someone can't build a franken, has no idea where to start and has never heard of this place, where else are they going to get a gilt 5513 for anywhere near that price? As genuine pieces become ever more expensive I can see really good frankens becoming valuable in their own right.

Not saying I think it is right or wrong. In the end it is the market that decides that and anyway I have never sold a watch in my life.

It happened with cars. It is easy to sell a franken Ferrari, fully declared as such, for up to half a million.

  5. I like the blue bezel. These things are personal, but the stainless insert never appealed to me. I bought a 2531.80 when they were new and still love it. I'm also wondering about going the other direction to you and fitting a gen smp dial and hands to a PO rep.

    Touché! :)

Yeah.. Now I have a new "hmmmmmm..... maybe I should..." on my radar. Hello google, bye bye spare time.

Yep. I spent too much of Friday, Saturday and Sunday night "researching" 6200 and 6204 for a build somewhere down the line. I've already been on Google about bombe cases. Always one more watch I need before I can rest

I'm savoring this one... I thought I'd completed the collection, thanks to your delicate touch with the 6536, but no.

I'm taking my time, as this is very likely the last one I put together.  All the (good) boxes are checked now.  :cc_detective:

Like many who get into Rolex, I am travelling back in time. I became obsessed with 1680's, then 5513's then 6538 which I am currently researching and slowly collecting parts for. This weekend, my obsession has turned to 6204 and in particular white dials. Are you planning on using the A260 movement or fitting an ETA? What case did you start with please?

  8. I can't remember how many times I've seen silly prices topped by even sillier prices. I kind of wish I'd paid the silly prices of five or ten years ago now. Phong cases and high end frankens are definitely the way forward for me. I wear them for my own pleasure. Apart from my watch guy I can't remember the last time anyone could name the watch I'm wearing. I don't invest in watches, because I don't sell and have no intention of ever selling either my gens or reps.

  9. From what I've seen if the watch is a Rolex copy with an S3135, which isn't a fantastic movement, but is dimensionally very similar to the Rolex 3135, then the date is where t should be. Same with a rep that uses the clone of th ETA movement the gen uses. The problem is when there is no practical way to use an identical or very similar movement. Compromises have to be made. This is just the same as the way you can build a kit car that is dimensionally the same as a Lamborghini. From the outside it can look identical, but pop the hood and no amount of dress up parts will convince a car guy that a small block Chevy is actually a V12 Lamborghini engine.
