  1. Dude, take a look at the Seamonster's neck. Where is the dividing line? Also that is not a 42mm. It is the 45mm size no matter what the guy says. Look at the size in comparison to the box. And the UPO does have a serial number. That is a UPO, no matter what you say. Shall I post a pic of my own UPO caseback for comparison?

  2. I gotta be honest with you guys, and I hope some of you can chime in with more knowledge.

    Yesterday I stopped by Jared's jewelry store and took a look at a Gen PO 45mm..........I also have seen the Silix version and Andrew's version, and honestly, I don't understand why the Silix is not considered "Ultimate" when in actuality it is closer to the real thing!!

    the differences I saw were: the bezel's luminator is not as nice as Andrew's version (which is closer to the Gen), and the date lettering being Serif. But the Omega logo on the Silix was the correct one, and the AR coating on both of them seem the same.

    Unless I'm really missing something, I just don't see a)why Silix is not considered ultimate, and b)why to pay $100 more for the ultimate.

    any clarifications/comments would certainly be appreciated!

    Two main flaws: the 12, 3, 6 and 9 hour markers are shorter than both the Gen and the UPO and the pearl is non-recessed. Both make the Silix PO look 'wrong'. The Logo and the low pearl on the UPO could be considered as bad but in reality they are nowhere near as obvious, at least in my experience. The recessed pearl on the UPO (POS that it is) is still way preferable to the horrible stuck on pearl of the Silix PO. As for the logo, that is really loupe stuff and 99.9% of people would not even think about it.

    Don't count on it. There's probably going to be some wiseass who will say it is a Rep and argue the toss about a 0.001mm variance in rehaut depth and thickness.

  4. Is it worth bothering to service the cheaper reps? I would imagine that it would cost about the same as a new rep.

    Is it possible to do very basic servicing yourself. What I mean is really just oiling the mechanism. You can buy the tools and oil on e bay how easy is it to get the back off one of these reps and is it obvious where to put the oil?

    If yu do find anyone in east London who does it put it on here, I am in Ilford and would use someone cheap and local.

    I think I've been to every watchmaker in East London. Most of the reputable ones wouldn't go near a rep with a bargepole and the one that does (PM for details) doesn't do the full works. [PM for details] on Barking Road will do things like regulation and servicing but can't do pressure testing or waterproofing work. God help you if you've got a dodgy gasket on your Noobmariner. All in all, Colin's is your best bet.

  5. Can anyone recommend a good UK based watchmaker who can service my growing collection of reps? Nothing demanding, just regulation, replacing seals, pressure testing etc. None of the ones I've approached will touch them, knowing that they are reps. I'm in East London, if that helps.

  6. I recently had my TT Daytona from Andrew resized at my local jewellers who also happens to be an AD. Anyway, as he handed the resized watch back he whispered "Incredible job, best I've ever seen, it almost had me fooled. The only thing that lets it down is the screws", then winked knowingly at me and gave me the job on the house.

    My question is, what exactly is wrong with the rep Daytona screws and will Gen ones fit? I have had huge problems with my TT Sub with stripped threads both on the screws and the inside of the link holes so I assume it is just a problem with quality but is it something more subtle like metal hardness or screw length?

  7. Doesn't bother me one bit. Just a matter of how comfortable you are with yourself.

    I've never quite understood the meaning of that. I mean, a watch does not make you gay. What would concern me would be is people getting the wrong idea of me and attracting the wrong kind of attention. It's not about sexuality or sexual insecurity, it's about pragmatism.

    Strangely enough, no one on either side of my family is gay (I mean, outwardly!).

    However, almost all of the British cousins have been to boarding school, including yours truly. Are you telling me that someone, somewhere didn't play hide the sausage afterhours in the Winchester College gym, once? Come on! Of course they did!

    I went to public school too. That notwithstanding, I have so far displayed a stauch unblemished record of studly heterosexuality. Still, when I think back on my Westminster days, the cold showers and buggery brings a nostalgic tear to my eye....

  10. Ms Barratt is quite correct. This whole thread has been conducted in a spirit of levity. Political correctness is often such a killjoy and whilst we can appreciate the more sensitive aspects of sexuality discussion, we also need to be able to poke fun. I've got nothing against gays, hell, I don't think anyone should as everyone has at least one gay cousin, right? When my cousin Dave came out, his parents were so shocked and surprised. I don't know why, since he sported a 'manbag' and had an unusually voracious appetite for Judy Garland since the age of about 12...

    PS. I still think Panerai's are about as 'ginger beer' as you can get.

  12. That's a UPO. You can tell from the pearl which sits lower down in the triangle than the Gen. In the Gen it is centered. The caseback Seahorse is also slightly off from the gen. It lacks a separating line on the neck. There is also wrong AR.

  13. I think that watches cross the line into gayness when they try too hard to be butch and masculine, where the emphasis on size and rugged masculinity just smacks of 'trying too hard'. Many Panerais fall into this category for me, sorry folks!

    The 45mm Omega PO is another watch that skirts the edge dangerously, especially the rubber strap version - the fact that James Bond wore it notwithstanding. (I love the PO - it's my favourite watch, but it is dangerously close to being limpwristed).

    Other than that, the HBB and anything gold or iced up just screams gayness. Don't know why the HBB seems that way but it just does. Something about that styling bugs me.
