  1. The truth being mundane or not, who cares, great first post and write-up.

The Mallers Building would inspire some creative writing, the dark corridors, small jewelers showrooms with the faded, dusty displays, you just know nothing here has been re-modeled for 75 years. Perfect set for a Sam Spade detective novel.

And Mardo, there is no way rep watches are sold there, I just can't imagine.

  2. Hi, another Chicagoan here - welcome to the forum, you've found the right place.

Now, I must ask, what building were you in, the guy with the rubbermaid container of Pams? Was it the Mallers Building (5 S. Wabash)? There are a lot of cubby hole businesses there.

I mean, that sounds kind of unusual, storing expensive watches in a plastic container, as if they were reps.

I'd like to see this for myself.

  3. Jeez, I guess that could be a problem - paralysis due to access to too many reps of all quality levels. Too much of a good thing, I can't even imagine this.

    Where is this, the Phillipines?

    I have a newfound appreciation for Josh's website :)

Anyway, it sounds like you are overanalyzing, just pick something that looks good to you and go for it.

  4. God, I'm drawn to this thread like someone watching an car accident site, afraid to read but I kepp coming back.

Everytime I read it I get anxious and depressed.

What can an average schlub investor such as myself do now? My retirement funds are invested in muni bonds (laddered), American family of funds, and a few stocks here and there.

Of course I've been absolutely hammered in the last year. I feel pretty defeated, and my broker doesn't have much to say either.

  5. I've recently discovered the shady world of inexpensive, yet reliable and trouble free quartz chronos encased in the supposedly high quality rep cases.

I get these timepieces from iOffer, haven't been burned yet, actually it's been a very pleasant buying experience.

I know the large seconds hand ticks when activated, but the chrono and subdials re-set perfectly.

  6. Wow, Robbie...this is just too coincidental.

I'm toying with trading in my 3 yr. old Scion xA for another car, I need a very small car so I can street park it in my neighborhood (I live in a VERY congested part of Chicago).

I hate the seating position of the Scion - seat too tall & short, no thigh support, and not enough room to stretch my legs out a bit. After 1/2 hr. driving my hips, knees and legs start to ache. After driving 1 hour, I have a hard time walking for a few minutes after exiting my car.

So, here's the coincidental part - I went to a family gathering on Sunday afternoon, I'm talking to my brother about getting a new car, how I went and tried out the Honda Fit (not enough leg room), and the Nissan Versa (boring/ugly).

He says "I know you, you are like me - you want a fun car to drive, a car you'll be excited about for a long time, don't try to talk yourself into an econo-box. Do me a favor and go check out the Mini Cooper. When we went to the auto show, I got in one and loved it."

So, I think your post is an omen, and I'm going to go check out the Mini before Thanksgiving.

  7. Great story.

I've been wanting an SS Datejust for awhile now, thinking about getting the rep but, every time I go to Tourneau and try one on I just can't get myself to commit to buying the rep as I just know it will be inferior and unsatisfying.

The gen DJ on the wrist is stunning, I especially love the new ones, the case seems to be a bit larger, I just can't pony up $6,000 for one, wish they'd perfect the rep.

Robbie, your's is gorgeous, enjoy it in good health.

  8. Hi, I have one, and had it modded with Bill Yao (MKii)plongeur dial and hands for a retro look.

No AR, and crystal is Hardlex, dunno if AR application is possible.

The case size is about 41.5, and it's definately thinner than the SFSO, so it'll wear a lot smaller than the SFSO, which I think is a massive watch.

The lume is average, nothing special.

I love the look of this watch - the double row of bezel teeth and the jubilee bracelet.

Sorry, no pix, digicam on loan.

  9. If you are going to have a continuing relationship with this man you will have to come clean sooner or later, you know that you're going to keep discussing watches and you will have to keep a large part of your collecting life (reps) a secret, and that's stressful.

So might as well fess up and assume he won't look down on you for buying reps, that's all you can do.

Maybe you can even turn him onto reps and our forum here, wouldn't that be cool?
