  1. Nice to finally see the SMP back on your wrist again J :) I must admit I'm suprised that you went for the quartz, they're usually bashed here  but I understand your reasoning completely, especially if you got it for a really good price :D

I just received a rep SMP (not from the dealer we discussed J) and it made me realise how much better the gen is compared to the rep. The dial was nice, but I wasn't impressed at all with the insert, it has a submariner-type pearl, and the quality of the bracelet is nowhere close to the gen. I would say that if you really like this model, going gen is the only option :D

  2. You can purchase an aftermarket insert on the bay and remove the pearl to glue onto your insert. The downside to the UPO is that the pearl is glued onto the bezel and not the insert, so dealers might find it difficult to source pearls. Wouldn't hurt to ask though.

  3. A little update :) I received my Discovery this morning.. I'm very impressed. I was afraid the white dial would put me off, but this dial looks so nice, love the "Panda" design. It looks great both with long sleeves and short, I'm wearing it with a t-shirt right now and it looks really good. A couple of quick and dirty shots I took when I got it:

  4. I cleaned a couple of watch bracelets and silver bracelets today as I wanted to try out some ultrasonic solution that arrived today. I'm looking at my silver bracelet now, and there seems to be some scratches that are quite deep on some of the links. When I run my fingernail over them I can feel them, they look like the swirlies/scratches our clasps get after some time of regular use.

Is it possible that the Ultrasonic cleaner could have done this, say for example if the bracelet links were touching each other, and the vibration caused the scratches? I've also noticed smaller marks on watch bracelet clasps in the past when I have cleaned them with my Ultrasonic cleaner.

  5. I agree that a Dremel is great to use if the scratches are prominent; if they are simple hair lines, I prefer the Cape Cod as it allows me to finesse the surface. Plus, it shouldn't take too much effort to eliminate hairline swirls.

I used to use these and they are definitely handy for polishing small areas which would be tricky for a dremel. The main reason I prefer the dremel method over cape cod is that cape cod leaves fine scratches behind. They are unavoidable, even if you use cape cod with a dremel it still leaves fine scratches behind. These are not easy to see in normal light, but under strong light they're visible.

Thanks all, what about the sapphire, should I tape that off too? I dont believe theres any AR on the outside.. then again, if there is, I'd like to remove that anyways.

I've got a dremel - which polishing paste do you use? The red?

Red rouge is not meant to be used on steel, its made for use on precious metals like gold and silver, its been used in the jewellery trade for years. I use 3 compounds; green, blue and pink and each one has its own wheel varying in softness.

  6. Woah, thanks for the movement pic, that definitely looks like a gen ETA to me. I thought it was clone because of the datefont, that isn't ETA datefont, but for some reason they transferred the datewheel used in clone ETA movements into a real ETA movement.

Did you pay extra for the ETA movement, or did you pay his web price?

  7. I bought this exact same watch from Silix many months ago.. it came with a clone ETA movement.. the datefont on yours is not ETA, it was the same as mine.

This is now the SMP that the majority of dealers are selling, I haven't seen a SMP by a different factory being sold now for quite some time. Nevertheless its a very nice watch and IMO much better than the previous commonly available ETA SMP.

@Rolexman: The end links are multi-piece and the bracelet has screws.

  8. Indians and Rado's.. I only know too well about this trend. I wear my gen Integral at social gatherings too sometimes.. cos thats the only watch from my collection that will be recognised! :p
