Almost all natural rubies are heat treated (and chemically treated) to improve the quality. They are not synthetics.

Synthetics can be produced with no imperfections, but the lack of imperfections are the proof of the fact that they are synthetics. For that reason imperfections are induced into synthetics.

My understanding is that at a molecular level the synthetics and natural rubies are the same.
