krbarnes
What's involved in replacing a 2836 movement with a 2824? Will everything transfer? Dial, hands, etc? Or is there more to it?
slickdick
There is more to it, 2824 is thinner vs 2836. This results in all kinda complications.
kbh
Dial and hands are a direct swap. I've only done it in a Datejust and it was an easy swap.
krbarnes
I'm getting a Rolex Sub replica that has a 2836 movement that needs attention. I was wondering if swapping the 2836 with a 2824 would be easy. I will just have to look at it when it gets here.
ubiquitous
The dial and hands will fit both just fine, as they share the same positions for the dial feet as well as the same size pinions for the hands (90/150/25). The movements differ in height as mentioned by slickdick (2824-2: 4.6mm tall, 2836-2: 5.05mm tall); what this means is that the stem will not line up center in the tube, and will cause tension when trying to wind or adjust the date and time using the crown. The end result will be many a snapped stem.
kbh
RE: snapped stems! Would that be the reason that some movements come with the dial spacer? I don't recall if its the 2824 in particular, but I've collected several that have come from Eta movements.
slickdick
You can correct the difference in height by a spacer, however the hand posts will be sunken too much to clear the hands from the dial. Like said, you will run into problems. Exchange a 2836 with a 2836, not a 2824. Edited October 29, 2009 by slickdick
