Hello All,

I got my 6497 movement in the mail today. I am using this for a base model pam. But the movement has the pin in it for the second hand. How do i remove the pin so my dial will sit flush on the movement?

You have to remove the seconds wheel, then cut the pinion so it doesn't extend past the top of the movement plate, but not too short or it will not seat properly in the jewel.

Pretty hard to miss the seconds wheel, as it sticks out the top of the movement :)

Honestly though, if you don't which wheel it is, or how to remove it, I would send it to someone with at least beginners knowledge on repairing the 6497. So many things can go wrong getting at it, then shortening the pinion, then putting it all back together. So unless you are more than willing to sacrifice a movement, pay someone else to do this.

If you do want to do it yourself, buy a used movement and practice on it first.

There is a flash video of a 6497 disassembly and assembly in the resource area of the forum (sorry, don't have the link handy).

Hi,

There is also the flash tutorial and reference documents on the ETA web site if you are really certain you want to go ahead and give it a try.

The 6497 is probably a good starter movement for a beginner as it is fairly large and relatively simple.

You will need a well lit, dust free work area, a good set of (sharp) jewelers screwdrivers, hand remover, movement holder, covered pots or other small containers to put the small parts in, Rodico or Cyber Gell to clean everything, Dremel and cutting disc to cut the pinion (any other type of cutter stands a good chance of bending it), a loupe, magnifier or extremely good eye-site, and steady hands.

As has been recommended, try and find an old movement to practice on first - there are loads of old pocket watch movements out there (by the bucket load on ebay - as long as you don't expect them to work).

Have fun.. :victory:

Cheers.. DR

I really don't think so, I like to do things on the cheap and I can't remember it costing too much.

Is it an expensive swiss movement you have or a cheapo asian? Mine was asian so I wasn't to worried.
