what2
wanting to build a 5517 type rep, but would like to have spring bars. I see two choices I guess, buy a 5517 from Paul for example and cut out the bars, or take the 1680 rep I just got and replace the dial-hands-crystal. I am guessing there are probably other ideas I am missing, any help? If I were to simply buy a 5513 type rep which seller has the model that is closest to reality right out of the box? Other question is besides the spring bars are 1680 cases much different from 5513 cases?
ubiquitous
Other question is besides the spring bars are 1680 cases much different from 5513 cases? When speaking in gen terms, the 5513 case differs form the 1680 case greatly, as the opening/aperture for the dial is smaller on the 5513. A gen 5513 has a 26mm dial, whereas the 1680 and 1665 have 26.5mm dials. As such, some reps may differ in this sense (the numerous models out there will vary), though the one consistent and firm exception to the rule is the MBW case (which is based on the smaller 26mm dial for both 5513 and 1680, thouch not accurate for the 1680). When I built justasgood's 5517, it was based on an MBW 5513 case; the lug holes were drilled out much too large by a previous owner, and there were two choices: i) scrap the case and start with a new one or ii) drill the lugs out even more and have bars pressed in to make it a 5517. I chose the latter for his watch, to which jmb graciously did the lug bar conversion... Before After
what2
then I am guessing my best bet would be to somehow get a 5513 case, but with 5517 bezel insert, dial and hands? Closest I could come to a 5517 that uses springbars, right?
ubiquitous
The dial is the easiest part; accurate hands may be a challenge (from my experience), and finding a good 60 tick insert with correct size hole for the pearl is even more difficult. what2
I think I am going to ask around to the various sources to see if anyone can provide a 5513 case with the 5517 parts, probably the cheapest and quickest route
ubiquitous
Best of luck with that...
