I believe the crazy buying frenzy over vintage Rolex "Stuff" is probably driven by folks who are selling either a MBW w/ genuine movement or they have taken a more recent SeaDweller (you can pick them up on Ebay every day for around 3300-3500 USD) Pop in a refinished DRSD dial and with a nice box, papers and accessories, you have a 10-15k watch!! Pretty good return on your investment. With the "genuine "papers, the MBW/ upgrade seller can take it one step further, grind down the serial numbers and re-engrave the serial #'s to match the certificate!! None of the above would fool a WIS, but not many real avid Rolex collectors are on Ebay, most of those guys have private sale, sources for watches. But Ebay is just loaded with folks who are not very knowledgeable, but know just enough to get in trouble. Most of those folks are a little greedy and that makes them easy prey for the scammer. Always looking for a bargain, they jump on a DRSD starting at 5k and bid it up to 8-9 k, win the auction, and gloat to all their friends about what a great deal they got on Ebay. Great, until you take the watch to your local Rolex AD, whereupon the watchmaker takes one look at the watch and tells you ‘Sorry, this is a fake Rolex”!! You now realize you have been taken!! You have a 400 dollar watch with a 1k movement. Now wasn’t that 600-700 dollars for the genuine papers a good investment afterall? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
