gimme
Lately when I come here, the advertisement that's on top of the page lists something I've either recently bought or have gone to their website. Not to be paranoid, but how does it know where I've been? Computer history?
slickdick
Google ads. And, google knows more about you then you know about yourself.
redwatch
The ad system is smart. Based on your traffic history that is stored in your own browser. Kind of scary isn't it? Yet another one of many good reasons to pay $3/month to be a member here - no more ads

freddy333
On other sites, simply use Firefox with the AdBlock Plus extension (allows you to block images/graphics from being downloaded, which also makes pages load faster) & clear your browser's cookies/cache (or configure your browser to do it automatically). You can also set your browser to block cookies, but some sites require them, so it is probably not a good idea to do that on a regular basis. ubiquitous
Apparently, Google also examines the pictures I attach to emails to send to friends. On one set of pics that I sent (with no message body and a subject that only referenced the watch), the side bar of relevant links and ads in gmail had two or three listings for granite counter tops and the sort. Kinda creepy...
